See the second box of Troubleshooting issues with iTunes for Windows updates for detailed tear down and rebuild steps. However if it won't connect in disk mode, and particularly if Windows shows no sign of it, then I would suspect a faulty cable or dock connector. Sometimes the connector can accumulate fluff which can prevent the pins making contact. This can be teased out gently with a thin sliver of card or plastic.

I've blown out the cables (3) and still not progress. Uninstalled and reinstalled ITunes. My computer does not even see the device as usb device or anything else. I've told the system to update and again. Nada. The iPod is charging via computer and senses when it is not connected to the computer but the computer does not reciprocate.
Any AV software that could be blocking communications?
Have you tried with a different computer?
Get a torch and a magnifying glass and inspect the dock on the device closely. Compacted fluff may not blow out.
Different pins are used for charging and data transfer.

They should be installed as part of iTunes. Does it show up if you put it in disk mode first?

So far the computer does not see it in any capacity. I reloaded iTunes to no avail.
