I am trying to update my version of Chrome on my iMac and every time I try and do so I keep getting an error message saying that the update has failed and I get error code 11.
My current version of Chrome is 48.0.2564.109 (64-bit) and I'm running OS X 10.11.4
Any reason why this might happen and how can I fix it?

If you have the most recent version of Chrome installed there is NO way for you to "try to update" Chrome. The 'About' screen for Chrome looks like the one below.
So how are you trying to update Chrome and getting this error message?
I've just been on the phone to Apple Care and they have checked for me that I don't have a second fire wall or any anti-virus program installed or any third party apps that may cause issues.
I have tried it with my fire wall switched off and in safe mode and on a test account and still having the same issue.

The commands aren't expected to help they just show you the state of your internet connection and the ability for the Google software to get to it's update server.

Hi, I did what you said and now when I re-download Chrome again, it has gone back to the much older version

Just a guess but your version is quite a few versions behind so that may be why. Just download the latest version and see how that is. The version is 50. something.
As dialabrain recommended, delete your existing Chrome application (in /Applications) then download and install the latest (Version 50.0.2661.75) from https://www.google.com/chrome/browser/desktop/
Hi, I have done that and it has updated to the most recent version of Chrome but I am still getting the same error message that it said before.
As a guess? You are running a secondary firewall, an anti-virus program, or an app such as Little Snitch which is blocking Chrome from reaching its update server.
Delete chrome from Applications
Do a reboot - from a complete shut down - not a restart
Then install it again
How do I do a reboot and what will this do to help the problem?
