appleTV keeps asking for appleID, password and authentication code circularly

after updating my iPhone I was asked to use the double authentication code, I had no idea of what kind of nightmare this is. I spent hours going from a device to another checking passwords and authentication codes. The last one is the Apple TV, after this stupid innovation my appleTV keeps asking for my AppleID, password and authentication code, and than goes back to the request for the appleID. Basically my AppleTV is useless. how can I eliminate the stupid authentication code, that makes all my devices basically inaccessible?

iPhone 6, iOS 9.3.1

Apparently the new Apple TVs will work as expected. The older ones are not designed for two-factor; but Apple should fix this via a software update (will they?).... but the work-around works.

Do not turn two-factor off because of this, just go to your iphone and get a fresh code after you type-in the password on the Apple TV and before you append two-factor code. Do this by....

(On iphone or ipad)

  • going to settings, iCloud
  • click on your iCloud ID at top of screen
  • click on "Password & Security"
  • click on "Get Verification code"

... then just type that code in the password field after your ATV password.

It works, I've done it on three older Apple TVs.

This is a nightmare! First I can't use itunes store on my apple tv because of the crazymaking password-verification code-username loop (kill me now!). Then I can't watch my itunes off my iphone onto my apple tv with airplay without being prompted for my password incessantly. It doesn't matter how many times I enter it (or how fast!), it won't just let me watch my show! Help!

It only just happened to me days ago, super frustrating, but the easiest solution I found to stop it was to physically sign out of apple box and sign back in. (Settings, Apple ID, sign out, add Apple ID ,yes it will look like the same loop but trust me it is not, enter info, add verification code) that is it, fixed the problem after days of trying to beat the ”loop”. I hope this eliminates everybody’s frustration. Good luck. 😳😡💩😱🙏-1F3FB; 🏻👍🖖 🏻

Yep. This works (entering code number at end of normal password). Get the password entered in then ask for a new code enter that in and good to go. Very frustrating.

To get a new code go to Settings, (Apple ID, iCloud etc), Password & Security, Get Verification Code. I also have device verification turned off in Home Sharing, not sure if that played a factor or not.

Edit to add, this is on an Apple TV 2

Encountered this same issue today. The fix that worked for me on my 2nd generation Apple TV:

1) log out of iCloud in the Apple TV

2) log back in. Will ask for code which will be sent to another decide. Enter code.

3) in Apple TV go into iTune movies. It will ask for login. you again will be sent a 6-digit code. When you enter the password, append the code to the password, no space in between the password and the code.

I ran into the same problem last weekend..... grrrrrr

I first followed this:

"If you use two-factor authentication with devices running older OS versions, you might be asked to add your six-digit verification code to the end of your password when signing in. Get your verification code from a trusted device running iOS 9 or OS X El Capitan, or have it sent to your trusted phone number. Then type your password followed by the six-digit verification code directly into the password field."

I did it and IT DIDN'T WORK and it kept going back to entering my email then my password. I tried 3 times. It ****** me off (my pasword is 18 digits long and complicated).

I had to go on my IMac, turn off the two-factor authentication on my appleID, add secrets answers, and then, go back to the Apple tv and try again. It finally worked.

I'm not adding two-factor authentication until Apple finds a solution.

Frankly, Apple should have told us that two-factor authentication doesn't work on Apple tv 1.

Make sure your router is not blocking any apple.com URLs.

Try restarting (power off) both Apple TV and router.

And you will need the method I linked to handle the authorization code.

Have you been able to get logged in to this Apple TV, on this network, in the past, or is this all new?

And, once again, please enumerate exactly the steps you are taking, so I can visualize what might be happening.

It is a pretty crazy solution. i actually guessed at just adding the code to the end of the password guessing that they have not updated the firmware in this older product to have a separate screen like EVERY OTHER device where you enter the Verification Code. the thing i didn't expect is that you can't use the one they pop up on your device and you must request a code. the Get a verification code link works like a charm.

clearly for a company that is world renowned for usability this is a fail

Yea - we've got multiple apple products in more than one home, plus kids abroad also logging into our account - so this 'solution' did not work - at all - and the whole design / concept is terrible. I just spent an hour yesterday turning off the two-step authentication - going through all the various security questions etc, then re-logging the normal way back into everything. I highly suggest this. I was pleasantly surprised to lean that turning off the two-step authentication allowed me to keep my old password, which was just a minor form of convenience normally not afforded by Apple's security designers.
