appleTV keeps asking for appleID, password and authentication code circularly

after updating my iPhone I was asked to use the double authentication code, I had no idea of what kind of nightmare this is. I spent hours going from a device to another checking passwords and authentication codes. The last one is the Apple TV, after this stupid innovation my appleTV keeps asking for my AppleID, password and authentication code, and than goes back to the request for the appleID. Basically my AppleTV is useless. how can I eliminate the stupid authentication code, that makes all my devices basically inaccessible?

iPhone 6, iOS 9.3.1

Apparently the new Apple TVs will work as expected. The older ones are not designed for two-factor; but Apple should fix this via a software update (will they?).... but the work-around works.

Do not turn two-factor off because of this, just go to your iphone and get a fresh code after you type-in the password on the Apple TV and before you append two-factor code. Do this by....

(On iphone or ipad)

  • going to settings, iCloud
  • click on your iCloud ID at top of screen
  • click on "Password & Security"
  • click on "Get Verification code"

... then just type that code in the password field after your ATV password.

It works, I've done it on three older Apple TVs.

MatsA got it right - solved my issue. Enter password; do NOT hit "submit;" request a code using another device (phone for me...settings; tap your name; password&security; Get Verification Code link at the bottom); attach the generated code to the end of your password; hit "submit." Done. This worked perfectly but ticked me off a bit: how would anyone know to do that without searching for and finding an answer on the Internet. I am thankful to those who posted here and hope this helps another frustrated Apple customer. (Why would the code not work in the provided boxes and have to go on the password line? Crazy!)

Exactly. With all due respect to those that have replied to me I am having the same problem. I have tried everything and adding a number to the end of the password field ( either I tunes out Apple ID) gets a very definite invalid ID or password? I have tried with two factor authentication off as well same result. There are two sign in's on the TV remember one for the ID and the other for the I tunes. Is there anything significant I have missed on this perhaps.

Good news I have after several weeks got it to work. There is really ONLY one way and I mean ONE way. Thanks for all the suggestions though . First like it or not you HAVE to have two factor authentication you don't have any choice. Two you have to reset your Apple TV from scratch . Three you have to set up manually. Sorry but this is the one and only way to do it. I don't like two factor authentication consider a normal TV, you want to change channels you have to go to the kitchen. And turn on your toaster to get permission, or maybe your refrigerator. Rediculous. Or you don't know whether you have to wear a tie or a long sleeve shirt or short sleeve one. if these were provided by Apple you would have to take them all with you as to change shirts you would have to ask permission from your tie or maybe your other shirt. In the old days, well you just wore them and I dont see the future of TV being that created by Apple. They could do better , better in thinking up a security solution. An Apple TV is not a portable device really it needs to be connected to a TV! So what's the point of all this? It took too long far too long to get this solution, and in the process I spend hours. No not the futur of TV a nightmare on TV!

The fix is to generate a 6-digit code using your iPhone and enter it immediately after your password on the AppleTV.

In order to generate a code, go to the iPhone:

-Settings

-Touch the personalized box at the very top of the Settings menu. This is the one with your name and AppleID, iCloud... listed.

-Touch "Password & Security"

-Touch "Get Verification Code"

That is the code you enter right after the password on your AppleTV. Remember not to put a space or anything else between the password and new code.

Was told this is for all older gen AppleTV's, as they don't understand 2-step verification.

Hope this helps.

If you are using two factor authentification with your Apple ID and if you have a 2nd or 3rd generation Apple TV, then follow these steps:

Go to settings on your Apple TV

Click on iTunes Store

Go to Apple ID and sign out if you are signed in

If you are not signed in, click on add new Apple ID

Sign in with your Apple ID and press submit

Put password in but DONT HIT SUBMIT YET

enter verification code immediately after the last character of your password NO SPACE Between both password and code

If no verification code was generated then go to your iCloud on another device, go to password and security and tap on "get verification code" then use that code on your Apple TV after password

NOW you can hit submit

If it asks you to have iTunes save your password, hit "yes"

Now you should be able sign into the iTunes store

Definite answer from support at Apple: Sign into iTunes on your Apple TV, after you have typed in your password (which we did 35 times) type the verification code immediately after it. No space. You have 90 seconds after you get the code to insert. It is a one time verification and you won't need to do it again. You may need to do this for your iTunes account on desktop and iPad as well. I feel your pain! I hope this has helped!

I have been asking this on and on and overtime I try the verification code at the end of my password it simply says INVALID ID/Password. Although a lot of followers have been very helpful in suggesting various ways to do this so far I have never managed to get it to work. Overtime you turn on the TV I need a verification code before I watch something. Every new programme and/or pause invariably needs the password again and I am sorry I suspect that Apple have changed what happens and make it so that this occurs. There we have spend money on buying programs and we have to prove to Apple each and every time we want to play them that were are entitled to.

It is irritating. Its also not secure as there is a temptation to simplify the password to make re-typing it quicker. Not a good security practice.
