Is there an app for messaging without phone number?

Hi yall!

My grandma got an iPad for Christmas and I can message with her from iMessage since I have an iPhone but the rest of the family has android! (I know right -.-) anyhow, we were wondering if there was some sort of cross platform app (that is like iMessage) that they could use to "text" her that works over email address or PIN or whatever (so internet in the end) since her iPad is not connected to a phone number and we would prefer not having to make her have to update her phone plan just so she can message us.

Thank you so much in advance for all help!

Hey there Chili,

isn't it it great to have the older generation try new technology?

So on my iPad I use a neat little app called FreeTone. When you signup you're given a free number which obviously cannot be used for phone calls but will be used by the app for incoming text. Once you allow the app to access your grandmother's contacts she won't have to remember the numbers but merely type the name of the android user.

Then there's always Skype...
