Photos - how do you tell if you have already moved a photo to an album>

I have 4000 photos to sort in Photos with some albums already created. I am systematically going through them in the Photos View (the one with all the Master copies) and sorting them into albums. So I might move 10 photos to an album and then come back to the master view and go to the next lot to file.

The thing is with so many similar photos, when I come back to the master view to file the next batch, I don't know where I am up to. Because if keeps the masters, is there a simlple way of telling where I am up to? I tried right clicking on a photo to see if it tells you which albums it is in but it doesn't tell me this. I am sending ages going back and forth between screens trying to sort what I have filed and what I haven't filed into albums. Very frustrating!

I must admit, i am a big fan of Mac but I do like the Windows system better where every photo only exists once and you file it in the album it needs to go in.

My second question is : If I delete a photo in an album, does it delete the master or do I have to double handle the photo and delete in both.

BTW I am using OS X Yosemite. Thanks in advance, hopefully it is user error and can be easily sorted!

Create a smart album with the rule "Album is not any". This smart album will only contain the photos that are not yet in any album.

File > New Smart album.

I must admit, i am a big fan of Mac but I do like the Windows system better where every photo only exists once and you file it in the album it needs to go in.

All photos are existing only once in your Photos Library, but can be used in many albums without requiring more storage.

The albums and smart albums are just referencing the photos stored in your library and showing them sorted and grouped in different ways.

  • The Photos View is showing all photos grouoed by Moments - taken at the same time at the same location, sorted by the capture date.
  • The "All Photos" view is showing the photos sorted by he date you added them.
  • Other albums and smart albums will show selections of the photos based on your criteria.

My second question is : If I delete a photo in an album, does it delete the master or do I have to double handle the photo and delete in both.

If you select a photo in an album, you can remove it from the album using the delete key, then it will stay in the library and other albums, or you can delete the photo from the library and all other albums by using the key combination ⌘⌫ command-delte.

That will move the photo to the Recently deleted album, wher you can delete it terminally or recover it.

Really - very interesting that in over a year and a half it has worked for everyone but you - maybe the entire rest of the band is not out of step but you are

Since this is a very old thread that was solved in early 2016 you have a totally different problem you need to start a new thread for your new and different problem - Writing an effective Apple Support Communities question

In no universe is this a question

The smart album does not always work and no one knows why.

You posted no question - just a false, rude statement - there is nothing to answer in your post

I told you in detail how to get help - posting insulting follow ups to your original false, rude post is not one of the steps to getting help - try reading the answer

Bye

Thanks Leonie. That is very smart! I have tired this and out of the now 3100 photos ( I have been deleting!) there are only 105 in this smart album not any. I think because it counts photo streams as albums (ie. June 2015 photo stream). So I guess I have to move the photos out of each 'photo stream' into the relevant albums and then the smart album will show me any remaining unsorted photos, am I right?

One more thing - My last photo stream is September 2015. Did Mac change this format after that time and no longer do photo streams?

Photos does not have events. So it does not create the monthly events that iPhoto did create.

My Photo Stream is still streaming the new photos to your library, if it has been enabled in the Photos > Preferences > iCloud, and the photos will appear in the My Photo Stream album, but you will have to add the photos yourself to monthly albums, if you want them.

The PhotoStream album doesn't appear under Shared albums. It will be under Albums.

You indicated you do not have the iCloud Photo Library enabled. Did you look at the General Preferences and see if you are using the System Library? If the option to use it is greyed out, then it means it is already the System Library.

If that is correct, go to System Preferences and open the iCloud Pane. Uncheck Photos from the iCloud Pane, then re-enable it. Reselect the options of PhotoStream and iCloud Sharing. Restart Photos and see if the PhotoStream album appears. If not, you may have to completely sign out of iCloud, then sign back in and re-enable all services you were using, including Photos. Restart Photos and test again.

Hi Glenn, thanks for your help. The System Library is greyed out. Under iCloud in the system preferences, the iCloud has a hyphen in it and then the photo stream and iCloud sharing are ticked. I tried resetting them all and restarting Photos and nothing changed. Can you tell me how to log into the iCloud? I think it was done automatically when I bought the mac, I don't think I have needed to do it since!

On the left side of your iCloud Pane (first image), you will see the option to sign out of iCloud. Be aware that this will remove all services from the computer that you have check off, including the info such as contacts, calendars, etc. The information will still be on the server and other devices. Once signed out, go back to the same place to sign back into iCloud with your Apple ID and password. You will re enable all services and that will restore all your information.

If that doesn't restore your PhotoStream album in Photos, then I'm not sure what else I can tell you.
