Safari launches on startup in foreign language

I'm running OS X 10.11.4 on a MacBook Pro (Retina, 15-inch, Late 2013) — 2.6 GHz Intel Core i7; 16 GB 1600 MHz DDR3; Intel Iris Pro 1536 MB

This just started happening. Every time I start up, Safari launches with this page open. I have no idea what language this is, assuming it's not just garble, much less speak whatever it is. I see the word "Pakistan" a couple of times. I assume that this can't be good. I know that it's annoying. I have no idea why Safari is starting up by itself, much less why it opens on this page. Oh, and I definitely have not clicked on that link. I didn't do anything with language-related preferences, and I've never been anywhere near nor have any connection to Pakistan. How do I make this stop happening? Thanks.

Google translate says it is in Malay language and about administrator password.

May be a scam.

Click  in the menu bar and choose “Force Quit”.

Select Safari and click “Force Quit at the bottom of the Force Quit window.

Hold the Shift key down and launch Safari.

If this doesn’t help, please run EtreCheck and post the report here.

Download it, open Downloads folder, click on it to open, select”Open” in the dialog to run it.

Click “Share Report” button in the toolbar, select “Copy to Clipboard” and then paste it when you reply.

Uninstalled both of those things, restarted and same thing happens. I guess I'll just hope that it's an annoyance and not an indication of something sinister happening (at least if I don't ever click on that link). It would be nice if I could uninstall Safari (and maybe reinstall it), particularly since I barely even use it. Thanks much to both of you for offering help.

Please read this whole message before doing anything.

This procedure is a diagnostic test. It’s unlikely to solve your problem. Don’t be disappointed when you find that nothing has changed after you complete it.

The purpose of the test is to determine whether the problem is caused by third-party software that loads automatically at startup or login, by a peripheral device, by a font conflict, or by corruption of the file system or of certain system caches.

Disconnect all wired peripherals except those needed for the test, and remove all aftermarket expansion cards, if applicable. Start up in safe mode and log in to the account with the problem.

Note: If FileVault is enabled in OS X 10.9 or earlier, or if a firmware password is set, or if the startup volume is a software RAID, you can’t do this. Ask for further instructions.

Safe mode is much slower to start up and run than normal, with limited graphics performance, and some things won’t work at all, including sound output and Wi-Fi on certain models. The next normal startup may also be somewhat slow.

The login screen appears even if you usually login automatically. You must know your login password in order to log in. If you’ve forgotten the password, you will need to reset it before you begin.

Test while in safe mode. Same problem?

After testing, restart as usual (not in safe mode) and verify that you still have the problem. Post the results of the test.

Apr 28, 2016 5:09 PM in response to Linc Davis

The issue did not occur in safe mode. Safari did not launch automatically. After a few minutes of waiting to see if it would, I launched Safari manually from the dock and it opened in only one tab displaying the home page I set (no other tab with the weird page on it). Restarting in normal mode resulted in the issue happening again (Safari launching with the weird page in a tab).

Apr 28, 2016 6:39 PM in response to thezim

One of your login items may be responsible. Please select the Login Items tab in the Users & Groups pane of System Preferences. Delete any items that you don't recognize. If you're not sure which ones to delete, double-click each to test it.

If a login item is grayed out and can't be deleted, click the padlock icon in the lower left corner of the window and enter your login password when prompted. Then try again.

To avoid confusion, note that checking or unchecking the box next to a login item does not inactivate it. You have to delete the item from the list.
