importing CD and missing data/skipping

i have had this problem ever since i bought this computer (mac desktop w/ separate external cd drive) four years ago. but it's intermittent and there's a workaround.

some CDs - even brand new ones w/ no scratches - for some reason either skip when imported or jump a second ahead in the song or blip out. i'll reimport it, and different areas of the song will do the same thing then. and - i'm telling you - pristine CDs w/ no surface scratches. it's even happened to a double CD i've bought, brand new, where one CD imported fine, the other was a problem.

the workaround i've used is to put it in my laptop (not a mac) and import the cd to that iTunes. then burn a CD of it. THEN put that burned CD in my mac external cd drive and then it imports totally fine.

You didn't need to burn a second CD. You could have simply copied the ripped files from one computer to the other. The quality probably would have been better too.

It sounds like a bad drive to me. As with anything of this kind you have to analyze component by component until you isolate the cause and in your case the drive seems to be the thing. I can't actually recall there being a case where it was iTunes itself causing skipping in playback of a normal file but it is possible to a bad drive to result in erratic rips. If you want to you can try toggling error checking in iTunes preferences, or use an alternative ripper such as XLD with advanced error checking and reporting features.
