iDVD wouldn't finish burn process of DVD - is it my hardware or is there a better replacement?

Hello,

I have been an avid user of iDVD for many years to make simple yearly Christmas DVD's of my kids and special birthday DVD's for friends and family. Over the last few OS upgrades and years I have become frustrated with not being able to drag pics directly from Photos app into a slideshow among other things. My breaking point is that I was trying to finish a DVD for my father's 70th birthday yesterday and never was able to burn the DVD as iDVD was 'not responding' every time it was about half way through the process. Activity monitor interestingly was saying that iDVD was using up to 168% of the CPU (however that's possible??) during the burn process. Here are some screenshots throughout the attempted DVD burn process. I do have quite a full computer at 486 of 500 GB on a MacBook Pro 15" Mid 2010 with 2.53 GHz Intel Core i5 running 4 GB and El Capitan OS. The file I'm trying to create is 737 MB. Is there better software I should be considering? Any assistance would be greatly appreciated. Thanks, Kory

HI there, Kory..

could be a few things..... Maybe you might want to make some space on your internal hard drive....500 Gigs is a wee bit small, and it can be upgraded

... so maybe find an external drive and start moving stuff over... Two....4 gigs of ram is the bare minimum needed to run El Capitan...the ram can be upgraded...you should be able to have 8 gigs okay. (I was going to say 16 gigs but my "Magic Mac 8 ball " says no. and it could be the brand of dvd you use--some do work better than others. I have had good luck with Verbatim and maxell,. and Taiyo Yuden. You could also clean the drive's lens with a blast of compressed air or use one of those dvd cleaning discs with the brushes on them. I've also used "BURN" for making DVD"s (basic ones), but there are other applications/programs which should work just as well. I think cleaning out some hard drive space and upgrading the ram should help carry you through on this one.... As for installing the ram and a new hard drive, yes, you can do that yourself as well. Just make sure you do a backup before you crack 'er open and upgrade 'er. Pretty much any 2.5 cm hard drive will work. You might want to consider getting a hybrid drive (SSD and HD combined)

which might speed things up a bit

good luck to you
