Microsoft has not updated a number of their websites since the release of the 9.7" iPad Pro so it is confusing.

The following states that you will need an Office 365 subscription if your mobile device is larger than 10.1" and has some other criteria: https://support.office.com/en-US/article/Why-do-I-need-an-Office-365-subscriptio n-b6518311-893a-4a89-bfcd-bdc56bf52085

The following has more details of extra features with a subscription -- but hasn't been updated since the 9.7 Pro -- and note that it does mention the 10.1" provision in the other sections (.g. Android): https://products.office.com/en-us/office-resources#ios-features-section

For home users with devices that are under 10.1 inches, Office 365 is free. Simply go to the App Store and you can download each separate application from the suite (Word, Excel, Power Point etc). For non-home users, or users with devices above 10.1 inches, such as desktop computers, and tablets larger than 10.1 inches, you will need to pay for an Office 365 subscription. If you work in education, Microsoft provides office for free for students, and teachers, with valid e-mails associated with their institution. Just in case you were not aware, every new iPad ships with iWork, a complete suite of office applications that allow you to view, edit, and create beautiful text documents, spread sheets, presentations. All you have to do is open the App Store, scroll to the bottom where it says "Apps Made by Apple", and download Pages, Keynote and Numbers. Not only are these powerful tools free to you, but the are even compatible with the file formats commonly used by Microsoft Office, such as .doc, .xml and .ppt. So enjoy one of the best office suites imagined without any of the worry about compatibility. Best of luck.
