When on battery power, with about 1/3 of the battery remaining, the machine shut down and won't run again unless I plug into power.

This sounds like the same problem I am having on my Mid 2012 MacBook Pro 15". When on battery power, with about 1/3 of the battery remaining, the machine shut down and won't run again unless I plug into power.

From System Information:

Charge Information:

Charge Remaining (mAh): 2150

Fully Charged: No

Charging: Yes

Full Charge Capacity (mAh): 6413

Health Information:

Cycle Count: 32

Condition: Normal

Battery Installed: Yes

Amperage (mA): 3282

Voltage (mV): 11728

Regardless what those specs indicate, I would think it is a battery issue. SMC reset didn't help.

Regardless of the cycle count, a consistently bad behavior like this is completely indicative of a bad battery. Given that they are constructed of several individual cells connected together to give the necessary voltage (hence the name, a battery of cells), I envision one or more being damaged or shorted out and causing the crash when the rest deplete. A trip to the Store or service provider will be inevitable. You did not give more model specifics so hopefully it is a non-Retina which has a discrete and removable battery for replacement: the Retinas have it glued on and are more of a nightmare.
