Since the latest iMovie update I've discovered that you have to hold 'R' to select part of a clip. This is VERY annoying, does anyone know a way to put it back to just click and drag to select part of the clip? Or am I just going to have to put something heavy on the 'R' key whilst I'm editing?
Very strange indeed as it works perfectly for me in the timeline. Doesn't work in the media browser there you need the R key. I use the original Apple Trackpad.
Thanks for that helpful information. In the german version of iMovie there is no hint to press the [R] key at all. So without this support forum you are completely lost. No way to find out how to select a part of a clip.

+1 on this complaint. I was baffled at why I could no longer click and drag. Not sure how anybody could think this is an improvement. Even an Apple iMovie engineer.
