Is Photos for mac going to be improved?

I transferred most of my photos from IPhoto to Photos.

IPhoto worked very well with batch changes of names places etc

Also I could find photos by location, date etc

You cannot sort photos by date (except date entered in the system and I have thousands of photos scanned from years ago)

You cannot get photos by location so you cannot find photos easily like you could in Iphoto

Whoever introduced photos is totally incompetent

Is it being fixed or should I migrate everything back to Iphoto or should I find another system - either on mac or PC

Thanks

Larry

It is hard to climb the learning curve when the information is so hard to find.

For example who would have guessed that you could not sort Photos by anything other than date added unless you put all the photos into an album.

Congratulations to you for figuring it out.

As to finding location by text, I must misunderstand you.

Nearly all of my photos have no description and many of the photos as done by Scancafe so the name of the file is a series of numbers.

If I understand you, I have to go into every single file and add a description with the full address such a 100 Via Veneto, Rome, Italy.

Then I can find photos with Italy, or Rome or Via Veneto. However, if I check Italia or Roma, I will find nothing so I need to know every word.

The time required is far beyond anything that I can contemplate and far less efficient that the system at working IPhoto.

Have I misunderstood you?

Thanks

Geoff

Maybe your problem is that you understand things that have never been said

NO one sad a word about changing anything

here is what was said - have you tried it?

2 - You can find photos by location, date, etc using the search command or smart albums (file menu ==> new smart album)
To find the one of Italy search on "italy" or make a smart album for text contains "italy"

Nothing at all about making any changes inanything

The search field is very versatile. As an example of what Larry recommended:

Typing the name of a place into the search field will show several search results: County, City, Neighborhood,...

Pick the result from the list you have been looking for. This will work, if the photos have GPS coordinates or you assigned a location from the Info panel.

Searching for text using a smart album will find the country name or city name, if GPS coordinates are available.

I am thinking of going to Photos from Elements 13. I have was using Aperture for years and when it ended I went to Elements.

I have all of my photos on an external organized by year. I understand that I can import these into Photos...but how do I get them all into Photos as "masters". In other words--I can take a photo with my iphone and it will auto import the photo into "photos". I can actually see the photo after import in the Masters folder of "photos". How would I get all of my photos off the external into that masters folder within "photos"?

I imported my 2016 photos into "photos" from my external...and they imported without a problem. Are they being read as "referenced" becuase they were imported from another source?

How would I manage them so that these photos on the external will import into "photos" and now appear under the masters folder within "photos" like the photo I took with the iphone?

Thanks

they are referenced if you imported them as referenced - See Old Toad's post above)

You can see what photos are referenced - make a new smart album (file menu ==> new smart album) for Photos is referenced

You can change those to managed (copy the original to the Photos library) by selecting all in that smart album and using the Consolidate command (file menu ==> consolidate)

It is best to always keep the preference to copy imported items to the Photos library checked and not use a referenced library
