How does 'Family Sharing' differ from two people just using the same Apple ID?

For two people using the same Mac, what is the difference between each person simply signing in with the same Apple ID and using Family Sharing?

If you each have a mobile device using the same AppleID can get confusing because there's too much overlap in configuration

Should you try to use Match separately I could see things getting messy since that is tied to an Apple ID and you would each only have a single one.

Items purchased with an Apple ID cannot be later split off to a different ID.

I think now Apple has introduced so many forms of sharing you are better off having one ID per person as soon as somebody is old enough to handle it.
