MacBook freezes while doing things

I have a 13-inch MacBook Pro, from Aug. 2012. OS X 10.9.5 (13F34)

This has started happening the past few days. When trying to do things like import files into a program or load a website, the application freezes for a moment. It's nothing super awful, but it is annoying and I have no idea what the cause is. I checked for a virus or malware and there doesn't seem to be any.

Suggestions? Thoughts?

Apple sold two 13 inch MBP models in August 2012. One of them (the one with an optical disk slot) has user-replaceable memory, and if that's your model you can replace it yourself. The other one (the one with the Retina display) does not have user-replaceable memory, and you will need to bring it to Apple or an Apple Authorized Service Provider for evaluation.

I assume that by Aug 2012 13" MBP you must mean that's when you purchased it so there is no AppleCare and it's not the Retina display version which wasn't available until October 2012 (according to MacTracker), but if it were me I would still take it to an Apple Genius for free diagnostics and they should then give you a flat fee price for repairing it. At this point you don't know which of the two memory sticks has the problem and needs to be replaced. Then you can decide if you would like for Apple to take care of it or you feel you can do it yourself. Most of us recommend either OWC or Crucial.
