Error message when I try to create or duplicate a numbers document.

When I try to create or duplicate a numbers document I get the following error message:

“Untitled.numbers” couldn’t be moved because you don’t have permission to access “Documents”. To view or change permissions, select the item in the Finder and choose File > Get Info.

Up to now I never had a problem creating or duplicating a numbers document. I don't understand why I am getting this error. Can someone please help me to correct this so that I do not continue having this problem. Kindly note that Pages documents is working just fine.

iMac, OS X El Capitan (10.11.3)
