El Capitan and iPhoto

After installing El Capitan, IPhoto has disappeared along with all My photos. Iphoto came as standard on my Mac and not an app purchase. Searched the Mac and can find nothing. Read the forums and tried to install, but just says not available. How do I get my photos back as been trying all week.

ANy help much appreciated.

Mac OS X 10.10.3 and newer include Photos, which is intended as a replacement for iPhoto and can import its library. If you'd like to go on using iPhoto in addition to or instead of switching to Photos, clickhereand try following the instructions; you'll only be able to do so if you previously associated iPhoto with the Mac App Store.

Upgrading to El Capitan does not uninstall iPhoto. It just removes it from the Dock , but it should be still in your Applications folder. Did you make a clean install and wipe the system drive before upgrading to El Capitan?

In addition to Niel's advice: Only iPhoto 9.6.1 will run on El Captan. If your previous version has not been iPhoto 9.6.1, it will be crossed out as incompatible.

Niel and Leonie

Thank you both for your responses.

IPhoto is not in the applications folders as it was part of the programme as opposed to a purchased app.

Neil - I looked at that link that you have suggested and I did a backup on my time machine, but did not realise that iPhoto would not be supported in this new operating system. I have tried to find the iPhoto app in the store but it is not there, it is also not hidden either, I have tried every possibility and read what other people have commented on in the forums.

A couple of people have said that when you open "photos" in El Capitan, the photos should appear, but this is not the case. My Mac did updates daily, so I would have thought it would have updated IPhoto, but I guess it didn't, so I am not sure whether it is worth getting a Mac expert in to try and find them or just writing it off as experience.

Cheers

Upgrading to Yosemite or El Captain does not remove iPhoto - if it is gone you removed it

If this article does not help then your only choice is to call APple and see if they will give you a download code for iPhoto 9.6.1

Your best path forward is to migrate to Photos, learn it (it is a new and different program with a leaning curve) and use it - iPhoto is dead and some day will totally quit working -- to migrate drag your iPhoto library to the Photos icon on the Dock

My Mac did updates daily, so I would have thought it would have updated IPhoto,

Your Mac will only update iPhoto automatically up to the last version that is compatible with your version of OS X. as long as you did not run Yosemite or El Capitan, it was not possible to update to iPhoto 9.6.1.

I have tried to find the iPhoto app in the store but it is not there, it is also not hidden either, I have tried every possibility and read what other people have commented on in the forums.

If you bought iPhoto with MacOS X 10.6 Snow Leopard or an earlier version, that came with installer DVDs, it is not an AppStore version and will not appear in the fourth tab "Purchases" and there is no chance to update it now.

But if your Mac came with MacOS X 10.7 Lion or a newer version, that does not have installer DVDs, iPhoto should be showing at the Mac AppStore for you.

Which version of MacOS X did your Mac come with?

Anyway, you need to find your iPhoto Library. By default your iPhoto Library will be in your Pictures folder and Photos for Mac will open it automatically. Is there an iPhoto Library in your Pictures folderol somewhere else on your Mac?

You may need to restore it from your backup, if it should be missing.

I have not removed IPhoto, it was their prior to the upgrade. I am very happy to use Photos, that is not the issue here, I just want to be able to retrieve the photos that were previously on the Mac. I think going forward after this, I shall probably use Dropbox.

I have emailed the contact at Apple that I have used previously and I will ask her about a download code for iPhoto 9.6.1, so thank you for your help with that.

Leonie, I never ran Yosemite, I went straight to El Capitan.

I am not sure which version of Snow Leopard but it did come with installer DVDs, this Mac belonged to my brother prior to me using it, so everything was set up for me as he was the Mac wizard.

I have checked the IPhoto library / pictures etc and it is not there. I have done a spotlight search on the whole machine for various photos (and checked to make sure I am searching the whole machine) as I had them in albums. I had been told that although I backed everything up, I cannot run that back up because it will be looking at the old operating system. Sorry if I sound a bit vague, and very grateful to everyone's help

Choose Utilities from the Finder's Go menu, open the Script Editor, run the following:

do shell script "defaults read ~/Library/Preferences/com.apple.iPhoto.plist RootDirectory"

and navigate to the resulting path in the Finder; if desired, remove the quote marks and put it into the Go to Folder command.

Try to search directly from the Finder instead of with Spotlight.

Enter "iPhoto" int the search field in the Finder toolbar, then click "Kind: iPhoto Library".

In the line "Search" click "This Mac"

If there are any traces of an iPhoto Library, this search should find them.

You may see items like "library6.iphoto" listed. Click them and look at the path bar at the bottom of the search window. It will show you the enclosing folder, where they have been found. This should show you the location of the iPhoto Library.

That is a neat little trick, Niel! Much better than having to read the plist file with prefsetter or similar.

But why do you wrap into a script instead of simply pasting the shell command

defaults read ~/Library/Preferences/com.apple.iPhoto.plist RootDirectory

into the Terminal?

What is the advantage?

I have checked the IPhoto library / pictures etc and it is not there

And again upgrading to yosemite or El Captain does not remove the iPhoto application or any user data like the iPhoto library - if they have been removed then you (or your brother most likely) removed them -- it sound like the disk was erased and El Captain was installed on a clean disk as a new set up - that requires that any user data be saved on a separate disk and restored form that separate disk after the clean install

this Mac belonged to my brother prior to me using it, so everything was set up for me as he was the Mac wizard. his for help

So you need to contact him

It's also possible to build it into a one-step process:

set the_string to POSIX file (do shell script "defaults read ~/Library/Preferences/com.apple.iPhoto.plist RootDirectory") as string

if the_string starts with ":~:" then set the_string to (path to home folder as string) & items 4 thru -1 of the_string

tell application "Finder" to reveal item the_string
