Seagate GoFlex won't act as Time Machine?

I have a Seagate FreeAgent GoFlex Drive which I have been using for sometime but it has now stopped working and I am getting messages to reformat it.

I had Snow Leopard when I first installed and now I have mountain lion, other than that I cannot think of any other changes to my system.

Does anyone know what might be the problem?

iMac, OS X Mountain Lion (10.8.5)

In the end I found out that because another User on my Mac had some files in the vault, Time Machine would not let me access any individual items and could only be used to do a complete restore to the same HD as was used to create the backup.

By simply removing the said files from the FileVault I was able to use Time Machine again.
