UI freezing at login from screensaver

El-Capitan 10.11.4; iMac 27" late2012.

For some time now my mac has been freezing randomly when trying to wake from sleep or re-accessing when screensaver running. This is at the login screen. Currently, I have set it to never sleep so at the moment it only happens when trying to re-login from the screensaver. There's no predictable way to reproduce this, it just happens. iMac may run for a couple of days without issue. When it occurred waking from sleep, there seemed to be no recourse but to hard reboot. From the screensaver I've had it respond immediately by briefly pressing the power button or I've had it recover just by waiting for a short period of time. There are no crash logs or panic logs. From my macbook I can connect to the iMac from Finder (SSH is refused) and access file system without issue.

Pulling my hair out on this one as I've exhausted my ideas. This only started with el-capitan and seems to be a lot worse with 10.11.4.

Any ideas to help me work out what the culprit is?

I don't know if you are still monitoring / receiving notifications on this thread but I have more info.

The issue seems to be related to distnoted: when the lockup happens, this process is running at >380%. I've checked by SSHing in from my Macbook and looking at running processes using top. Killing the rogue process immediately frees the iMac up again. Interestingly, and perhaps related to the note I made about plugging the TM drive back in, the status of TM is 'Prepaing Backup' - it will stay like this until I stop that backup, at which point it continues to work as expected. At some unpredictable future time, distnoted will ramp up again and I'll be back to square 1. I thought this only happened when the iMac power savings have sent it to sleep (and the displays) or when the screensaver is running - I've never had it happen any other time. Yesterday I noticed in Activity Monitor distnoted hitting 198% but this didn't lockup my iMac - I killed the process (TM status stuck at 'Preparing backup')

User associated with the killed process varies: it has been 'agent' also '[my wife's user id]'.

My workaround (which *****) then is to SSH in from my Macbook and kill the process. At least it avoids me hard booting the iMac. I don't know how to debug further really - how do I find out what is causing the process to spike. Clearly TM is a potential but what to do??
