Update on straightened and exported images

Yesterday Apple released OS X 10.11.5 and I wanted to know how well Aperture fares with that. It seems nothing has changed for the better. But the recently discovered problem that exported images which have been handled with the straighten tool (have a look here straight) has become even weirder.

But - I found a workaround. If you klick on the Auto Enhance button before or after you use the straighten tool, everything looks fine - at least on my system. After you clicked the Auto Enhance button you can do everything with the image - exported images won´t show any errors too. As Auto Enhance uses Highlights and Shadows a lot you have to deselect if it alters your image too much.

Apple does know about the straighten bug. I filed a bug report two weeks ago and received the answer that a record of that bug already exists. My file has been closed then. I don´t know, if that problem will be solved before 10.12 will be released.

Your right.

I just tested again, and the bug persists.

And applying the Auto enhance fixed it on the test images I tried.

Great discovery!

Hey there,

I found this entry in console log:

iconservicesagent[1290]: -[ISGenerateImageOp generateImageWithCompletion:] Failed to composit image for descriptor <ISBindingImageDescriptor: 0x7fe9db51b670>.

quicklookd[1380]: Error returned from iconservicesagent: (null)

A quick web search revealed several similar problems with preview app and finder. Some newer web entries appear within the apple developer forum. Because this seems to be a problem of OS X and not of an aging Aperture we could hope for an official solution...

best wishes

Oh wow. Yes, it works for me too: applying Auto Enhance solves the bug affecting images that are both Straightened and Levelled.

But I really dislike the effect of Auto Enhance. So I think I will continue with the workaround that I've been employing for the last couple of months:

1) straighten (but do not level) the image;

2) export the straightened version;

3) import the exported straightened version;

4) apply levels.

I have this same problem in iPhoto 9.6.1 after upgrading to El Capitan (from Yosemite.) So this is a bug related to using the older, no-longer-supported applications in El Capitan. I did NOT have this problem in Yosemite using the same version of iPhoto.

What I have found as a workaround in iPhoto is slightly simpler than your above export-import process, maybe something similar can work for you.

1) Copy Adjustments while in the Adjustments tab (can do this via right-click)

2) Straighten the image under Quick Fixes

3) Enhance feature under Quick Fixes

4) Paste Adjustments under Adjustments tab (this effective un-does the Enhance).

This will make the straighten "stick" so that it's there in an exported version.

Note that I did try Enhance, then Undo the enhance, but that does not make the straighten "stick".

I guess at some point we iPhoto and Aperture users will have to face the music and switch to Photos. I am really disgusted with Apple for going down this path. Photos are probably the most important thing I have on my Mac.
