How do I mute/unmute iPhone 6 plus

Suddenly I can't make receive calls. Internet works. I place a call; I don't hear "ringing." Call times out after 30-60 seconds. Someone calls me; phone rings; I hear nothing. I call person back (from another phone) and they tell me the phone rang, but no one answered (dead air).

I Suspect there is a mute function I am overlooking that has gotten set inadvertently. Help.

iPhone 6 Plus, iOS 9.3.1

A couple of things to try:

On the left edge of the iPhone when looking at it straight on, are a small switch, and the volume toggle.

Make sure the switch is to the right position, so no red is showing.

You can also swipe from the bottom of the iPhone upwards to reveal the Control Center. One of the controls there is the volume bar. Drag it to the right to increase volume.
