Video metadata not kept when exporting

Hello everyone,

I have 720 videos that have been reencoded few months ago to save space and the metadata has been erased in the process.

I have manually changed the metadata each file one by one in photos.app via the command to change date and location.

I want to export some video but I found that the changed metadata is not exported properly:

Here is the properties of an edited metadata of a video, the edited date is 9 Sept 2006

User uploaded file

However here is the exif export of the same video (same result if I drag and drop the file or export it. If I export the unmodified original I have the date BEFORE editing it)

There is no way to get the modified metadata in any export of video. It works with pictures, no prob but I can't find a way to export video edited metadata...

Could someone help me with a way to preserve it?

My goal is to move from Photos to Google Photos.

Thanks

If you export the video as unmodified original, you can add a XMP sidecar file with the IPTC data. This file will include the title, the description, the GPS coordinates, the keywords, but not the date.

So you could write the capture date into the description field to save it.

You can read the XMP sidecar files with Xcode or simply Text Edit.

Some applications will be able to apply the the XMP sidecar files when importing photos, but Photos for Mac can only write them but does not apply them reliably when importing.

Hello Léonie,

Thansk for the help.

I cannot export it as unmodified as it will export the metadata *before* it has been modified, I need to export the video with the metadata that i wrote on Photos.app. It's working for photos with the export function, but not with videos.

Is there a way to force the export *with new metadata* on videos? Of a workaround?

I need to export the video with the metadata that i wrote on Photos.app.

The sidecar file will have the most recent metadata you added in Photos. That is the idea of the sidecar files. Export the unmodified original, so you do not lose quality by rendering it again, but put the metadata you added into a separate file. That is the best you can get, since the videos do not support the EXIF and IPTC tags like he image file formats do.

Leonie,

I did not know that a video could not contain EXIF... Sadly the .xmp file does not contain any relevant info:

Is there a way to change the creation date of the videos in order to get them sorted?

The XMP are hard to read, but when I tested it, the XMP had many metadata -see the underlined part. GPS, title, keywords. Did yo quit Photos to force it to close and update the library, before you exported the originals? I noticed that the sidecar files were more current, after I closed and reopened Photos.

You can try to modify the creation dates with a tool like A Better Finder. , see this link: http://www.publicspace.net/ABetterFinderRename/version8.html

It is worth having, even if it is a bit expensive.

Or, if you do not mind the Terminal, try the free exiftool. http://www.sno.phy.queensu.ca/~phil/exiftool/

There is not much Automator support for Photos. The scripting interface for Photos does not allow much.

You could try this Apple Script and modify it according to your needs. Script: Batch Changing the Title to the Capture Date https://discussions.apple.com/docs/DOC-8432

Basically, it will write the capture date into the title field of a photo or video.

if you export your videos with the option to use the title as the filename, you will see the date saved in the filename.
