Cannot load DMG files after installing 10.11.5

Have a Macbook Pro (early 2013) with OX X 10.11.5. When I installed the update the installation froze but after reading suggestions I rebooted into Safe Mode, and after it ran disk utility I was able to reboot and find that the update had installed completely. Everything seemed to be working OK so concluded the disk utility had fixed the errors.

Now a week later I needed to update some software and find that it will not load or run DMG files, I tried more than one file so it seems to be related to the type of file (DMG), not the source (Adode, Epson among others). Each time I get a Protocol wrong type for socket message. I tried rebooting and downloading again with no success. I have already checked Finder/Preferences to make sure that External Disks is enabled. My research does not produce any other suggestions.

Has anyone else run into this? I can't use my standalone Epson scanner until I can do an update which it will not launch. Nor update any of my other softrware

My MacBook Pro (late 2013) froze during 10.11.5-update. Did a force restart and everything (actually) looked ok, until I realized that i couldn't load a single DMG! It was really great the "osxupdcombo10.11.5" which supposedly fixes the dmg-error comes as a .dmg. Greeeeat, so... safe-mode doesn't do the trick. Recovery bloody Mode doesn't do anything other than unpack the .dmg-file into a new dmg-file (uncompressed if you want to), and my time-machine backup is on a drive with dmg-encryption-thingy, which now is invisible for my mac.

Other ways to mount disk-images in El Capitan? Or is there some brainy way to mount and run the dmg in recovery I am not aware of?
