Cannot load DMG files after installing 10.11.5

Have a Macbook Pro (early 2013) with OX X 10.11.5. When I installed the update the installation froze but after reading suggestions I rebooted into Safe Mode, and after it ran disk utility I was able to reboot and find that the update had installed completely. Everything seemed to be working OK so concluded the disk utility had fixed the errors.

Now a week later I needed to update some software and find that it will not load or run DMG files, I tried more than one file so it seems to be related to the type of file (DMG), not the source (Adode, Epson among others). Each time I get a Protocol wrong type for socket message. I tried rebooting and downloading again with no success. I have already checked Finder/Preferences to make sure that External Disks is enabled. My research does not produce any other suggestions.

Has anyone else run into this? I can't use my standalone Epson scanner until I can do an update which it will not launch. Nor update any of my other softrware

I have the same errors noted in the first thread with the additional problem that my Time Machine was using a NAS and now cannot access it. This means that I cannot revert to an earlier version of OS. 10.11.5 definitely is the problem. I tried downloading the Combo Update but that comes in as a .dmg - I cannot launch .dmg files because I get the "protocol wrong type of socket" error.

Not sure how to proceed - I cannot go backwards nor forwards....

I'm facing the same issue, I had to force restart after my MacBook Pro simply wouldn't complete the update to 10.11.5. Going to try and reinstall the OS, and hope that fixes things.

I'm seeing this is the syslog every time I try to attach an image (dmg/iso)

May 23 23:05:37 Sirius CoreServicesUIAgent[314]: Error -60005 creating authorization

May 23 23:05:38 Sirius diskimages-helper[924]: *** -[NSMachPort handlePortMessage:]: dropping incoming DO message because the connection is invalid

Going to try reinstalling, hopefully that should fix things

Per the suggestion from Dialabrain, I restarted while pressing CMD R to get to the utilities menu and then reinstalled the OS. I am now running 10.11.4. The .dmg error messages are gone and my Time Machine backups are working normally again. All seems back to normal.

The key clue for me was realizing that I had not updated my wife's MBP laptop - it was still running 10.11.4 and had no issues. Interestingly though, while reading through other threads regarding this issue, I discovered that there have been others who had the same errors on 10.11.4. This is concerning so I remain very wary regarding problem resolution.

In the meantime.... WTH Apple?? You publish a patch that crashes everyone's system? There is such a thing as QA for software.... just sayin'.

I finally had time to download this as you suggested. Unfortunately it downloads a DMG file and as others noted of course I cannot run it because it get the same message Protocol wrong type for socket. Basically I unable to do even an Apple update. Any suggestions to get around this.

Sorry to hear that. You could try starting in Safe Mode and see if the Combo Updater will open.

I had tried using disk utility and loading the dmg that way, no luck, same error message. Also went into Safe Mode and tried the same thing - this time did not get the error message but it never loaded, just did nothing. Having read Seapaddle's post which also came from you this morning I resolved the issue by going into Recovery Mode and reinstalling the software figuring even if it came up in 10.11.4 I could use the Combo Updater to get back to where I was but Apple's system did recognize the machine was in 10.11.5 and reinstalled it. And I am now able to load dmg files and everything else seems OK. I am posting this for others who are running into this.
