Razer orbweaver and key-mapping

Hello everyone.

I have been looking into some gaming peripherals as editing control surfaces and have found that some editors use the Logitech G13 and the Razer Orbweaver. I was wondering if anyone here has experience using them in FCPX and other professional software.

I use a Razer Naga Hex, however I have found that keymaping some keyboard functions to the side buttons simply does not work. I get a OS X "bong" sound when I try to use a button mapped to Control+-, for example. Has anyone else encountered this or had any other issues?

MacBook Pro, OS X El Capitan (10.11.5)

So I figured out the problem I was having with my mouse and it turns out that there's a physical switch on the bottom that caused the confusion on my part. The key macros work fine now so far and it's pretty nice.

Oh yeah, I've seen Mestman's demo with the Tangent Element. That's a very slick piece of hardware and it's exciting that it can be used for more than color correction in resolve. The entire thing, though, costs over $3000. Even the least expensive piece, a panel of 14 buttons, is about $650!

The Razer Orbweaver has over 20 customizable buttons along with a thumbstick, which too, is mappable, at about $130. So you see how I balk at control surfaces like the element. And yes, I am completely aware that one is "professional" and one is "for gaming", but I'm a FCPX user....I just want the best tool 😀

So my plan is to use something like the Orbweaver along side the Tangent Ripple for the track balls. $480 total...still less than that 14 button panel. They should come out with maps for the Ripple in FCPX, right?

Hey,

did you end up getting an Orbweaver? I bought one a couple of weeks ago to use with Premiere and while I find it great in theory, there seems to be something a bit unstable about it. Premapped keys randomly reassign after a period of use - normally a space key will start triggering spotlight search.

Have you experienced anything like this? Razer support aren't very helpful and keep suggesting I use it with a PC.

Never heard of any of the hardware you mention so can't help you. If it can be mapped, the manufacturer probably knows best.

Over on Ripple Training there is a video clip discussing the process of mapping a series of color correction and colorist hardware tools to FCPX Took the guys may days. DAYS.

This week on MacBreak, wemakemovies.orgfounder, Sam Mestman brings the Tangent Element to the set to demonstrate how FCP X’s editorial functions can be mapped to the control surface for fluid, tactile control of the app in the edit bay.
