Logic Pro X "Musical Typing" issue (cannot turn off)

Hi all,

I just downloaded logic pro X after several years on logic 9 and have experienced some issues setting up my Yamaha keyboard as a software instrument controller. (brief rundown on my setup: keyboard usb into computer as well as a 1/4" into mixer, then usb into computer. Computer out to headphones.)

This setup has worked for me countless times before in logic 9 , but after downloading the new program, it seems that I can only use various click or typing based input for software instruments apparently called musical typing.

I have found no semblance of a way to turn off this so-called musical typing, nor have I found anything about selecting my Yamaha YPG-235 as the controller to be preferred over musical typing. Finally, I have even replaced the usb cables to make sure they aren't defective and verify that my computer is receiving the proper signal.

So my question is: Is there anything glaringly wrong with my setup or anything that I'm missing that would prevent me from using my keyboard/controller as various software instruments like I could in Logic 9?

Have you had any similar issues with designating a midi controller and/or musical typing trumping your powered and plugged in keyboard?

Thanks,

PF

let's trouble shoot this in baby steps.

Goal - get your keyboard controller to play software instruments. ( this will confirm you keyboard is working properly).

Preference->Audio->Devices ( Output device should be built in output )

Your input device should be your mixer ( this if for later - not right now)

Make sure you keyboard is plugged in USB to the computer

Open up Audio / Midi setup -> Window - Show midi

In the midi window you should see your Yamaha keyboard - (and not grey'd out).

If you don't see it or it grey- stop it is a problem with your USB cable, you need a driver or another issue.

If you do see it.

Make a software instrument track in Logic - make sure there is an instrument selected such as a piano. Play a note on the Yamaha keyboard and you should hear it.

I have not been able to do the second step of "open audio/midi > window > show midi because I am not seeing the proper names to click on. We are both using Logic X correct? Can you maybe clarify where I find this "Show Midi" command?

I found a helpful youtube video here: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wg5YMLwBLEY, but when I click on the instrument after creating a track designated "external instrument", it seems to not be giving me the same option to select my computer in the dropdown menu.

My computer seems to not be picking up my computer, but I have replaced the usb cables already. I will look into drivers and the like as well.

Thank you for the helpful response.
