Samsung U28E590 won't display in 4k

MacBook Pro 15" Retina (Late 2014)

El Capitan 10.11.5

Displayport->HDMI

Possible options for resolution are: 1080P, 720P and 1600x900

As this is a "4K" monitor, this is sub-optimal. Scanning all of the menu options on the monitor was not very illuminating. :-/

Solution?

I had this issue if I used the HDMI cable with the Mini DisplayPort to HDMI Adapter.

Try getting a DisplayPort to Thunderbolt cable to get 4k @ 60Hz. That's what I am using and its working great (Retina Late 2013).

If you use a HDMI cable without the adapter then I think you will only get 4k @ 30hz.
