Applewatch work-out can't be stopped anymore

Have been very happy and enthusiastic with my Applewatch so far. Using it rather intensively for measuring workouts, primarily Elliptical and Outdoor walk. Lately it systematically doesn't want to accept the Stop anymore and just keeps running measuring. On the stop/pause/lock screen it seems to accept the push on Stop but then returns to the timer screen and continiuing the timing. Even stopping the watch and restarting doesn't stop the timer anymore and it's worsening....

It's an Applewatch 36mm with latest watchOS version.

Don't know what to do anymore, help, help!

Hi Paul

If you have previously used any third-party fitness tracking apps (such as Strava) to record workouts, check whether there is presently an active or paused activity within any of those apps on your watch. If there is, end that activity from within that app on your watch (not on your iPhone).

The following steps may otherwise help:

  • Close all open apps on your iPhone: double-click on the Home button, then swipe up on each app preview.
  • Turn both devices off together, then restart your iPhone first.

If the issue persists, it may next help to unpair and re-pair your watch. The Watch app on your iPhone takes a backup of your watch when unpairing via the app. Choose to Restore from Backup during set up. Most data and settings will be restored, with some exceptions (eg Apple Pay cards, passcode).

Jonathan,

My extensive test showed no improvement at all after all the restarting and re-pairing. Work-out timer is still unstoppable or to be more precise I managed once to get it "stop"ped as it should after 10-15 attempts but then the "save" showed the same problem: it seems to understand the touch but simply ignores it. After restarting the watch and restarting the workout app it picks up the old timer and continues again timing.

Any other suggestion is welcome!

Paul

Jonathan,

Thanks for your quick reply! Appreciated! I do not have additional fitness apps on the watch; as a matter of fact I can't find one that suits my needs. So that can't be the reason for my trouble. I tried all steps that you described including the unpairing and re-pairing with my iphone. I noticed that even the "switch off" of the watch didn't work in the same way as the "Stop" of the timing in the work-out. I will see tomorrow how it works out in normal operation after the re-pairing. I am optimistic that it will work out but I'll let you know the result. Thanks a lot for your help!

Friendly regards, Paul
