Connecting a non-airprint printer to the airport express

Can I use an airport express as a stand alone wireless network to allow printing from an IOS device. I want to connect a non AirPrint printer to the usb on the Express with no ethernet cable plugged in and therefore no internet and use it as printer from an IPhone?

My main questions are

1. can a non AirPrint printer be used to print from IOS using Airport Express

2. if so, can the Airport express not be connected to the internet?

Thanks in advance.

1. can a non AirPrint printer be used to print from IOS using Airport Express

Basically, no. Connecting a non-AirPrint printer to the base station's USB port will NOT make it AirPrint capable. In order to print from an iOS device to this particular printer, you would need a third-party app (like Printopia) running on a Mac.

2. if so, can the Airport express not be connected to the internet?

The Express' print server function does not require an Internet access to work. That is, you can have the Express create a local wireless network, connect a USB printer to it, and share the printer over this local network. However, again, if the printer is non-AirPrint capable, iOS devices will not be able to print to it directly.
