Suspicious Pop-up Adv while using Safari on iPhone

Hi all

I was browsing the web on Safari using my iPhone and a very insisting ad popped up. It attempted to re-direct me to a website called http://free.com-00.site

So I tried to force exit Safari, close the windows, re-start the iPhone but the ad wouldn't go away. I ended up clicking OK to the ad and now I'm worried about the security of my data. The ad was saying that I won an iPhone but never asked me any personal info.

In the matter of few minuties, I've changed the password to my Apple ID account and contacted my online bank to warn them about what happened.

Is there anything else I should be doing/checking to make sure that I am not being scammed or similars?

Thanks so much!

Had this same issue. That web site took over Safari. iPhone 6S Plus, iOS up to date. All apps up to date.

Went the Cleard Web Site Data route. Didn't work. Did it again, and rebooted the device. Didn't work.

Disabling JavaScript stopped it. But re-enabling just resulted in the whole mess all over again. That means that there is a nasty bit on my phone right *now*. So what is that nasty bit doing in the background?!

Another setting that stops the Nasty bit from being invoked is setting cookies to "Allow from Current Web Site Only." That stops it.

*But* *that* *IS* *NOT* removing the malware from the device.

Has me more than concerned.

Conjecture is that a Cookie is referenced when certain browser activity takes place. The cookie is some how involved in a redirect to a PHP script @ the http://free.com-00.site/ URL.

Checked this out at the Common Vulnerabilities and Exposures site. Do not see anything there. IMO Apple should investigate.

Deleting history and cookies, restarting doesn't work. Mine only pops up when I go to foxnews. My daughter with the same phone goes to foxnews with no problems so I doubt it's currently attached to that website. Could be something that was attached days ago, is removed, and only infected devices that went to the site when it was infected? Obviously going to foxnews triggers this pop up that's imbedded either on my iPhone or hidden on the website.

Hi all,

Iphone fully updated and I had the same but only while using firefox and while browsing Ars Technica. Cleaning cache and cookies did not help, whether in flight safe mode or not. I eventually uninstalled the app.

It doesn't seem to happen on safari yet. Fingers crossed and I'm a bit scared by all this, as not related to user modifiable content (cookies, cache, etc).

You should never click OK on such pop-ups, call them back, or give them any information.

Go to Settings > Safari > and tap on Clear History & Website Data. Reset your iPhone for good measure and you should be OK.

Try a simple Reset: hold down the Home and Power buttons until you see the Apple logo (10-20 seconds).

I have had the same experience, with the same redirecting site. What I did was:

1) closed the Safari window without clicking the OK button which has appeared

2) opened the IOS Settings and switched to the Flight mode

3) re-opened the Safari and closed the tab which was trying to redirect me (it is harmless in the flight mode)

4) switched off the Flight mode

And that's it. The web page which tried to redirect you is gone. 🙂

As a general rule, never click the OK buttons in these situations. Just turn off the Internet and you will be able to safely erase the malicious tabs.

Hope it helps.

Cheers
