File Permissions Denied

I don't have permission to open my Documents folder. When I ask for Info on the folder, it says, You Have Custom Access. When I tried to fix the permissions by making myself the Owner with Read & Write capabilities, I became locked out with no means to the permissions lock.

Would anyone have an idea on how to get to my documents and regain my administrator status?

A

Please back up all data.

Select

Shell ▹ New Command

from the Terminal menu bar. Uncheck the box marked

Run command inside a shell

if checked.

Copy and paste the following line into the text box that opens, then press return:

mkdir disabled_shell_files

Close the Terminal window that opens. Repeat with this line:

mv .profile .bash_history .bash_profile .bashrc .inputrc disabled_shell_files

Your old shell initialization and history files will be saved in a directory named "disabled_shell_files" at the top level of your home directory. It's normal that some of these files will not exist, and therefore you will get some "no such file" errors.

Close the window, open a new one, and test.

You may already know that files with a name beginning in "." are not visible in the Finder by default. So if you open the folder you just created in the Finder, it will appear to be empty, even though it isn't. If you need to recover some of the data in the shell files, use a shell-based text editor such as nano(1). Make sure you're not recreating the problem. Otherwise, you can delete the folder.

Now you should be able to go back and take Step 1 in my earlier comment.

making progress: following your last instructions, returned to STEP 1; then in STEP 2, I'm able to select my username and click Reset for Home Permissions and ACL. I'm unsure if Reset completed; the "button" stayed gray and didn't give indication it completed after several minutes.

back at my home directory in finder: I have read/write permissions for all, but my Documents folder, which still says "custom access".

also so a bit unusual: when clicking "Get Info" on my folders w/ read/write permissions, they don't have the usual Person and Priveledge fields that are locked by password.

my Mac is acting abnormal (someone secretly played with it, and I'm trying to straighten it out) I'm sure your suggestions would be solving this in more typical situations.

IF you have any patience left or suggestions for me, you know I'd appreciate it.

Yes, waited a bit and tried it again. Then wrote the previous last message in response.

I've need to tell you, I figure now that "others" had privately visited my Mac 2-3 years back.Restored it ~15x, w/ Apple Care, and paid Apple Certified. Guess they can't tell you or assumed that I configd it that way, so I started reading and eventually think I have privacy, offline.

I think that's the problem here. Can you tell me if it is possible to make my Mac a standalone when it's been configd to share?

THank you

I'm not sure what you mean. Please run this command as before, then relaunch the Finder again:

sudo /usr/bin/find ~ $TMPDIR.. -exec /usr/bin/chflags -h nosappnd,noschg,nosunlnk,nouappnd,nouchg {} + -exec /usr/sbin/chown -h $UID {} + -exec /bin/chmod +rw {} + -exec /bin/chmod -h -N {} + -type d -exec /bin/chmod -h +x {} + 2>&-

Linc - As Before:

THe Terminal command "echo $PATH" = /usr/bin:/bin

I can access my username in Recovery Mode + Terminal command "resetpassword " but Reset "Home Folder Permissions and ACL" command does not reach "Done"

Appreciate your time, on my behalf, trying to resolve the issue to this point. Seems like I need someone to physically work on my Mac.

WHat are your thoughts?

I can open the document folder, but my priveledge is "custom access" and not one of my Home folders allow me to view or change any priveledges or claim ownership. Not being able to Reset home folder permissions & ACL in directory utility and the state of the shell came to your attention as part of your troubleshooting.

Thanks for sticking with me and giving your all.
