iCloud storage vs the hardware storage

I don't know what's the point to have a bigger hard-drive if the iCloud storage is full. And it's so annoying to keep popping the warning up and block the view of the screen, unless I upgrade the storage for iCloud. Is there anyway I can disconnect iCloud from my MacBook. Although iCloud is useful, I don't like it connecting to whatever I save in the MacBook and automatically use the iCloud storage to store it. Why do I need two locations to store the same files?

Please help.. thanks

MacBook (Retina, 12-inch, Early 2015), OS X El Capitan (10.11.5)

You don't have to use iCloud and you can control exactly what it is used for. Visit your System Preferences. It's your call.

BTW, the main purpose of iCloud is to sync our data across all your devices. If you're not using iPhones and/or iPads in addition to your MacBook, the need for iCloud diminishes substantially.

Your backup strategy should be multiple media types in multiple places. A Time Machine backup to an external drive would be and should be part of your strategy. It would make sure you have the data you need.

Think "Backing up is not just for truck drivers." when you do something important. It will help you keep a strategy to secure your data.
