Touchpad "click" does not work

I have a MacBook Pro (Retina, Mid 2012). The "click" function of my laptop's touchpad stopped working. It still tracks my finger movements and it does the right click. I had to plug in a mouse to make it work. I started the computer in "safe mode" and it works fine, but when I reboot it stops working again. I have disconnected all peripherals. What should I try next?

No, I have nothing fo the kind. I ended up calling Apple support and tried everything under the sun, including re-installing the OS. But to no avail. BTW, I had actually previously booted in "repair " mode, not in "safe" mode as I saw d in my initial question. The touchpad click does work in "repair" mode, but not in "safe" mode Nor in a new account I created. The Apple support guy told me my last r sort was to do a clean install... Yikes! Quite a drastic step. Any better ideas?

Please read this whole message before doing anything.

This procedure is a diagnostic test. It won’t solve your problem. Don’t be disappointed when you find that nothing has changed after you complete it.

The purpose of this test is to determine whether the problem is localized to your user account. Enable guest logins* and log in as Guest. Don't use the Safari-only “Guest User” login created by “Find My Mac.”

While logged in as Guest, you won’t have access to any of your documents or settings. Applications will behave as if you were running them for the first time. Don’t be alarmed by this behavior; it’s normal. If you need any passwords or other personal data in order to complete the test, memorize, print, or write them down before you begin.

Test while logged in as Guest. Same problem?

After testing, log out of the guest account and, in your own account, disable it if you wish. Any files you created in the guest account will be deleted automatically when you log out of it.

*Note: If you’ve activated “Find My Mac” or FileVault in OS X 10.7 or later, then you can’t enable the Guest account. The "Guest User" login created by "Find My Mac" is not the same. Create a new account in which to test, and delete it, including its home folder, after testing.

Thank you for your response, I had already tried with the "Guest User" Account, and also with a second account I have that has none of my applications installed. The touchpad acts the same way, that is to say that it still tracks my finger movements and it does respond to the two-finger push for a right click, it just does not respond to a single finger push to do a "click".

So to summarize, I have checked the touchpad settings, I have checked the accessibility mode to make sure it was not affecting the touchpad, I have tried to use the touchpad in multiple accounts, guest and other, and I have tried it in Safe mode, and the "click" does not work. I have re-installed the OS and it still doe snot work. Yet, the single click DOES work in "REPAIR" mode, as evidenced when I went to repair my disk (I had done this earlier in the day), and then again when I went into that mode to re-install the OS system. In addition, I connected two different USB (wired) mouses and the same thing happened. This proves that it is not hardware, since both the touchpad and the mice act the same manner, and the "click" worked in REPAIR mode.

The only way I have access to the mouse click function is by way of my Wacom tablet. The Wacom tablet is also wired, but it is the only thing that works at this time to select, or "click" on my computer.

The apple support guy said I could try to delete some configuration settings files (which I have never done and I'm worried I might mess up...) or do a clean install. What do you think? Or do you know of any other option that I might have not tried yet? If I have to delete config files, can you point me to a good set of instructions so I can do it correctly?

Thanks!

CLARIFICATION: in my original post I had said that the mouse worked in SAFE mode, but I had mistaken REPAIR mode for SAFE mode. I also said originally that I had connected a mouse, but it was a Wacom pen. I had not tried a wired mouse at that point and I thought it was all the same, so I was surprised and when I did try a mouse and found it did not work. So pretty much most of what I wrote in my initial question was not accurate. What I wrote this time is correct

If you don't already have a current backup, please back up all data, then reinstall the OS.* You don't need to erase the startup volume, and you won't need the backup unless something goes wrong. If the system was upgraded from an older version of OS X, you may need the Apple ID and password you used.

There are ways to back up a computer that isn't fully functional. Ask if you need guidance.

If you installed the Java runtime distributed by Apple and still need it, you'll have to reinstall it. The same goes for Xcode. All other data will be preserved.

*The linked support article refers to OS X 10.11 ("El Capitan"), but the procedure is the same for OS X 10.7 ("Lion") and later.

This procedure is a diagnostic test. It makes no changes to your data.

I've tested these instructions only with the Safari web browser. That's what I suggest you use, even if your preferred browser is something else.

Please triple-click anywhere in the line below on this page to select it:

ls -@BOaen /L*/Preferences | pbcopy

Copy the selected text to the Clipboard by pressing the key combination command-C.

Launch the built-in Terminal application in any one of the following ways:

☞ Enter the first few letters of its name into a Spotlight search. Select it in the results (it should be at the top.)

☞ In the Finder, select Go Utilities from the menu bar, or press the key combination shift-command-U. The application is in the folder that opens.

☞ Open LaunchPad and start typing the name.

Paste into the Terminal window by pressing the key combination command-V. If you use another browser, you may have to press the return key after pasting.

Wait for a new line ending in a dollar sign ($) to appear below what you entered.

The output of the command will be automatically copied to the Clipboard. If the command produced no output, the Clipboard will be empty. Paste into a reply to this message.

The Terminal window doesn't show the output. Please don't copy anything from there.

If any personal information appears in the output, anonymize before posting, but don’t remove the context.
