Touchpad "click" does not work

I have a MacBook Pro (Retina, Mid 2012). The "click" function of my laptop's touchpad stopped working. It still tracks my finger movements and it does the right click. I had to plug in a mouse to make it work. I started the computer in "safe mode" and it works fine, but when I reboot it stops working again. I have disconnected all peripherals. What should I try next?

I went back to check the INK ap that you mentioned preciously, and the Allow me to Ink in any application

that I had unchecked earlier, following your suggestions, was once again checked. So I removed that application... and Tadaaa!!! It works!!!! Thank you so very much! I would have never thought of that. You saved me from having to do a clean install, which I was dreading. 🙂 🙂 🙂 🙂 🙂
