My work is selling off Iphone 4S for £20 - I was going to get one as a back up!
I was not sure that the phone will become obsolete after IOS 10 is introduced?? or will I be able to continue using ..if I just dont update???
Dont want to buy ifit wont work in a couple of months.

Given the processor power of the 4s, this seems to be a good decision.
It will still work exactly the way it works now even after iOS 10 is released. It just won't use iOS 10. Lots of people are still using the iPhone 4 which doesn't take the current version.
So basically the Iphone 4s is old and wont be using new capabilities of IOS 10 but it will continue to work in the future! I was just worried I would buy a phone and then it wont work at all in a couple of months time, it is only back up phone
It will work until it the hardware fails. What OS other iPhones have won't make a difference. And Apple doesn't automagically disable phones with older versions, either. 😉
Note: if you're using a more recent iPhone, you'll need to get a different SIM for the iPhone 4S. It uses a microSIM. Later iPhones use a nano SIM.
The basic things will still work as they do now, for example taking and making calls, Messages, Mail, etc. There might be apps that can't be updated anymore at some point in the future, but, the 4s can definitively be used as a backup phone.

Much like the iPhone 4, 3GS, etc, the iPhone will still be functional, but will simply not have the ability to update to the latest software. £20 sounds like a great price for a backup iPhone like that so long as the battery isn't completely ready to be replaced. Apple can service you a replacement battery for that of course though, for a cost.
