BUG: Character styles not working, plus sign and redefine style greyed out

In Pages, Keynote and Numbers, the character styles functionality seem to be broken.

When I select a character and want to create a new character style from its formatting, the menu doesn't let me. The plus sign is not clickable. This is clearly a bug and should be fixed because it completely annihilates reusability of formatting in Pages, Numbers and Keynote.

In the screenshot below, I select (highlight) a character which is part of a paragraph styled with the style named Body, displayed as Body+ in the paragraph styles.

The changes to its formatting should allow me to save them as a character style, but the plus sign is greyed out. The menu item Redefine style is greyed out as well.

This behaviour started in the last few MacOSX versions.

What can I do to fix it?

Using Pages v5.6.2 on OS X 10.11.5.

As long as you select text whose existing character style is none, the ability to add (blue plus-sign) a new character style is denied. Just as this is true, each time that I changed the font attribute(s) of a letter, a word, or group of either, the ability to add a new character style became available.

Apple did not make a special version of Pages for me, and I cannot reproduce what you are proclaiming as a BUG.

I have tested the behaviour on 4 Macs in our office. They all show the same behaviour. The plus sign does not become available under no circumstances. Numbers v3.6.2 (2577) MacOSX 10.11.5 (15F34)

Here an example of the Body paragraph which has no color, italic or bold applied to it. The changes to the text are apparent. The plus sign will never become available.

The plus sign does not create a new style.

Also interesting, the "available plus sign" looks like this:

The plus sign used to look different in other versions.

Whether one enters text in a Pages v5.6.2, or Numbers v3.6.2 table cell, and then changes the cell's text attributes, one is presented with the opportunity to make a new Table Style paragraph style from that cell text content, but not a Character style which is relegated to body text. Selecting a cell containing red Helvetica Bold Oblique text does not offer any blue plus sign in the Character styles palette in Pages v5.6.2, and in Numbers v3.6.2, the Character Styles palette is disabled. One can apply existing Character Styles associated with document body text to cell text contents.

Pages '09 v4.3 allows one to change font attributes in a table cell, and then create a new character style from the cell contents.

Yes, this is why I created the post. Character styles are broken and not accessible. I doubt that's planned functionality as it is completely misleading. Sometimes it's possible to modify existing styles, sometimes it's not. The behaviour is unpredictable. It's also not true that this started in versions after '09 because I never had those old versions installed. My mac is too new and I remember that character styles used to work.

Under no circumstances, across multiple Pages sessions and documents, can I apply text content to a table cell (whose format is text), modify the text attributes, and then add these as a new Character style in Pages v5.6.2. It will add as a new Table cell style in Paragraph styles, but not Character Style. My implementation of Pages v5.6.2 is consistent in this regard.

Whether this is a deliberate design intention, or a bug is for the Pages/Numbers product team(s) attention. You can communicate this directly with them via the Pages application menu's Provide Pages Feedback entry. Numbers v3.6.2 has a comparable menu item. In consideration of the large volume of posts that they receive, a response is unlikely.

Apple reserves the right, whether deliberately, or accidentally, to add, change, or remove product features without notice, or apology.

Thanks for giving me those links. I was looking for such a possibility under the Help menu. I have rolled back my numbers on one of the Macs and it does indeed seem that text in tables is treated differently. This is a big UX shortcoming on Apple's side. In fact, it's implementation laziness at its best. I have written to the Numbers team to improve this unusable interface.
