Using my iPhone 6 in Canada

Have a Verizon iPhone 6. Planning a week vacation in Southern Ontario, driving my own car.

What do I need to know in advance, as far as usage (is there a Verizon plan for Canada? Better buy a Canadian sim card?), I will need data, especially since I plan to use my phone's GPS and maps...

Thanks so much!

Verizon's international roaming rates have improved significantly. It's worth contacting the Global Support team and inquiring: 800-711-8300.

All Verizon iPhones are sold unlocked so that will not be an issue should you decide to go with a local carrier. However, if you're only going to be in Canada for a short period of time, it may not be worth the trouble to do so. I have a prepaid account with Bell Aliant for my iPad for when I'm in Canada. I do recall that they wanted a Canadian address. As it happens, I have one but, because it's a vacation home, I have no good proof of residence. Fortunately, they weren't very fussy about proof.

AT&T has cleaned up their act quite a bit. International roaming can be added from the web site, and it expires after 30 days unless renewed. And the price isn't even that outrageous for voice and data packages. If you are connected to WiFi and have WiFi calling enabled calls to the US from outside are free. The best (meaning most expensive) package reduces the voice rate over cellular to 35¢/minute, which is cheaper than PAYG SIMs in Europe. So on my trip to France last month I didn't bother with a local SIM in our unlocked phones. The added services for 2 phones came to $150, but in the overall scheme of things that's less than 1 day's meals in Europe. And not having to monitor data usage like a hawk was refreshing. As was keeping the same phone number.

I actually went to Verizon's website. Here is what they offer, which I think makes teh most sense, since we plan traveling in Canada for only 5 days:

TravelPass

  • Your worry free option.
  • Use your device on your international trip just like you do at home, for a low daily cost.
  • Now your wireless plan travels just like you do. Take your domestic talk, text and data allowances with you. It's the economical way to stay connected. You’re only charged on the days you use your device while traveling.

$2/Day

-----

So, if I get it right, the only change between using my phone at home, vs. in Canada on those days — is paying an extra $2 a day? That's it? Sounds pretty good...

...Or am I missing something?...
