Computer will not shut down

Hi.

My 2012 MacBook Pro is still running but is having some serious issues. 😐

1) Computer WILL NOT shut down. Selecting shut down, sleep, pushing the power button, even holding down the power button...none of these work.

2) All F keys (top row) are not working. This is mainly a problem b/c the screen brightness is not easy to adjust, as well as volume, mute, key brightness. However, F3 and F4 still work.

3) Running ridiculously slow. Too much beach ball. This is a given on Old Macs I suppose, but thought I might tag this on since I've never been able to seem to fix it.

Computer is not under warranty.

Any tips would be most helpful.

Thanks,

Clark.

First, try resetting the SMC.

Reset the System Management Controller (SMC) on your Mac - Apple Support

If that didn't fix it I need some more information. Is your macbook an early, mid or late 2012? Which screen size is it?

Look under the mac. It should have an number that begins with an A, then 4 digit number like A1278, A1425 etc.

You're mentioning that some of the keys on the keyboard aren't working, and the mac is very slow. Is the mac very noisy with the fan spinning at max speed and, the mac doesn't feel warm?

Is there Wacom software installed on your MacBook Pro? If so, upgrade it to the latest version. If that doesn't help uninstall the Wacom software, including possible Wacom items in System Preferences > Users & Groups > Login.

If not: please post an Etrecheck report of your system: http://etrecheck.com

Hi Leroy,

Thanks. Don't remember which Os. Tried clicking on Apple (upper left corner) --> About this Mac --> No response.

What do you mean by upgrade, please? Like normal software upgrades, system upgrades? Comp reports all software updates are current. No system upgrades or anything like that have been performed.

Changes occurred spontaneously.

With thanks,

If you can't turn it off you'll need to take the battery out in that case. The problem is that you'll need to open your mac to do that. You'll need to remove the bottom plate by unscrewing the bottom screws that goes around the edge. I think your mac is using a standard philips head screw head, and most people should have a small screwdriver somewhere in the house. If you're worried you can take your mac to an authorsed Apple store and have them help you reset the SMC. It's a small job, so if they're nice enough they can do that without charging you a an arm and a leg (but then, it's Apple).
