Do I need a case for my apple watch?

I just purchased the sport watch (38 mm w/ silver aluminum case) and I'm trying to decide if I should purchase a case. I know the watches are made to be pretty durable and I really would prefer to not sacrifice the design but I'm worried I might need the case. I work out a lot and teach fitness classes - would a case be helpful in protecting the watch from sweat and bumps against equipment? Colleagues who have the watch say they are ok with out a case but I'm worried it could get banged up at the gym. Also, I work at a restaurant and think the case might help against protect against water damage. Any advice?

You may also wish to consider the following:

Fitting a thin film-type screen protector that covers the full screen of your watch, including around the curved edges.

Purchasing AppleCare+

  • AppleCare+ extends the warranty period to two years and also includes cover for up to two instances of accidental damage (each subject to a service fee / excess).
  • It is available to purchase within 60 days of the original purchase date of your Apple Watch (conditions apply).

    Hi

The answer to your question is a matter of personal preference.

You may find it helpful to read reviews of protective cases on a website such as Amazon.

Commonly reported problems with Apple Watch cases / protectors (in general) include that they may, for example: fall off relatively easily, reduce touch sensitivity, scratch quite easily, get dirty (on the outside), trap moisture and/or trap small items of debris beneath them (which can then cause scratches on the watch case and/or display).

Using a case may also make it harder and/or less convenient to keep your watch clean and dry. Cleaning and drying your watch is recommended, for example, after exposure to sweat and other liquids in order to maximise comfort and prevent long-term damage to the watch.
