iPhone 6 GPS not working

Hello there,

For just about the past year (since about iOS 9 release), my phone's GPS has not been working. When I would try to use Apple Maps, it would say my car was off the road somewhere in the grass, and sometimes many roads over. It could never keep up with me while driving. This also occurred while using Google Maps, so I knew it wasn't just a problem with the Apple Maps app.

I tried to restart the phone several times, delete GPS apps and reinstall them, fully wipe the phone and start it from scratch, etc. The problem still exists. So for a while I just dealt with it. I just used my car's GPS if I needed one. Though it always bothered me that my 128GB iPhone 6's GPS was not working. However, with the release of the game "Pokemon GO" which relies on GPS, I am quite disappointed as I keep getting an error message that my GPS signal is not detected (yes, I enabled location services for the app).

Is there some app or something I can use to diagnose my GPS antennae within the phone? I have full 5-bar (dot?) signal, and my phone is in developer/debug mode, so I can also see the detailed signal strength is -81. I have AT&T as my carrier. There must be some way to determine if something in my phone is damaged. I would go to the Apple Store, but the closest one is about an hour and a half away, so I would like to avoid that if possible.

I FIXED the problem. Before I give you the answer read on and make sure this is what is happening to you. I was having GPS issues where the both Apple and Google Maps were incorrectly mapping my location so directions would just cease. I would drive on a freeway and the Maps program would show me off the freeway in a field a little distance away and the Maps would not provide any direction other than the message "Proceed to the starting point". This issue happened after a recent iOS update and I assumed it must be an iOS bug. Turns out that it was not an iOS update bug...

Instead, it is the antenna inside of iPhone6 that was malfunctioning. The malfunction probably was made more apparent by the iOS update but the GPS issues were a result of antenna malfunction. I called around 6-7 iPhone repair places and 2 of them said they can replace the antenna for 60 bucks. I believe that the part is called "iPhone6 Logic Board Antenna Flex Cable". Once replaced my iPhone GPS issues went away and all is back to normal.

I have this problem too. It also affects my bluetooth connection...I have to place my phone next to the car dashboard to get a connection. I've called Apple support about this. I was told that this was a known issue and would be fixed in future iOS releases. My gut feel is that this was a non-answer meant to evade the real issue: that this is a hardware problem. It's quite disappointing that such a key feature--location services--would be subject to failure and not be repaired by Apple.

If anyone can confirm that this is indeed a software issue, I would love to hear about it.

Hardware problem. I replaced the flex cable as previously described and my GPS is now working perfectly. Purchased parts and tools from fixit.com. $25 total. The install is not easy - be certain to have containers to label and place the very small screws as you disassemble (I used the same containers you would get for side sauces for to-go orders in restaurants).

Apple Community, I need your help.

For those of you who updated to iOS 11 and noticed that the GPS stopped working or is sporadic, what did you do to solve your problem? Or is this problem still persisting because Apple isn't doing anything about it. I've tried every possible method to solve it, yet the GPS doesn't follow my every turn-by-turn, it struggle to locate my position, and my arrow is all wacko when I run the GPS. Sometimes it shows that I'm 30+ miles in another location! I have tried the soft reset, hard reset, start from new iphone, uninstall and reinstall the maps app, did satellite acquisitions through my carrier, all the toggle switches for cellular, wifi, and location services, and I have received now the 2nd warranty on this phone...

Any solutions?

My iPhone 6 GPS started working very poorly around the time I upgraded to IOS 11. I Tried a lot of tricks found online and nothing worked. I was going to buy a new phone and thought I’d give this a try...

Worked perfectly and my GPS is back to normal. Took a little over an hour. You can buy the part and the needed tools right from the website for under $20. If you’re not comfortable with taking a lot of the phone apart, you may want to have a repair shop do it but I don’t know how much that would cost. Great instructions on the ifixit website. Make sure you keep track of which screw goes where because they are all deifferent sizes. You could ruin the phone trying to put the wrong screw back in the wrong hole. Good luck if you try it.

Exactly the same thing happened to me. Got a new battery, but had an error when trying to back up to the cloud, so another visit to the Genius Bar. My phone had to be wiped clean and start over. Lost text messages and photos. Immediately my blue tooth ear piece worked only when within 3 feet of the phone, the wifi turns off - and requires me to put in the passcode rather than remembering it, and Google Maps and Apple Maps put me 1/2 mile away from where I am when on cellular. I wish I had not gotten the "help"! Grrrrr....

My iPhone 6 has been doing the same thing for a few months now. I have done everything Apple asked; twice and the problem still exists. In fact, it has failed all together; Siri cannot even find me anymore. I contacted Apple today, May 6, 2018 and they told me Apple is finally addressing this issue; while they did not tell me what they were doing, I was assured a fix is being worked on. My fingers are crossed.

Hi,

I have Iphone 6. My phone GPS shows exact location on all apps (googlemap, Ola, uber) when I am connected using my wifi. But when I use my cellular data (3G / 4G) the GPS location is inaccurate and is like 100/200 meters away from my location and keeps fluctuating some times.

I have gone through the forums and tried below options:

a. Location on/off

b. Reset network settings

c. Reset location settings

d. Reset all settings

e. Date and time automatic

f. Soft reset, restart

Even after the above it does not shows correct location and hence cannot use google maps for navigation as blue arrow is away from my exact location, cannot use runkeeper as shows bad gps signal.

Today i have upgraded to IOS 11.4 but still the same issue.

Please help

There are several other threads detailing this issue on iPhone 6, 6S and interestingly iPhone X.

I've tried practically every software and setting based solution, none of them worked.

The latest iOS update had temporarily fixed the issue (approximately two weeks of stable GPS turn-by-turn). That fix "broke" today 07/18/2018, potentially related to me syncing my iPhone with iTunes and doing a backup to my PC (not sure exactly what would have caused something like that to occur, but immediately following that sync and backup the GPS stopped working properly again, as described by many people in this thread and elsewhere - failure to properly triangulate a signal, plot a course and track position while driving).

After the GPS functionality broke again today, I looked to the Apple discussion forums again for an update or solution. I found a fix that IMMEDIATELY worked with positive results. I strongly suggest you try these steps:

1. With phone powered on remove SIM card

2. Power off phone

3. Power on phone

4. Insert SIM

5. Power cycle phone one more time

That worked for me as soon as I did it. From the same location that my phone could not track my position, it was immediately able to locate my phone, displayed it facing in the right direction, quickly plotted a course on the Google Maps app, and called out turn by turn accurately while it tracked my movement.

Hope this helps anybody reading this thread. Please respond if it worked for you!

I just tried the SIM removal/reboot process above on my 6 running 10.3.3 and didn't see any immediate improvement (Waze not working before or after). I'm still on 10.3.3 (need to keep some 32-bit apps), so maybe it works for the latest OS but not for 10.3.3. It's only been 30 minutes since the SIM removal/reboot, if it starts working better later, I'll post an update.

What's unusual on my iPhone 6 (10.3.3) is that the GPS works about 40% of the time, and doesn't work about 60% of the time. When it is working, it always works perfectly. I've never seen a directional glitch, so it doesn't really seem like the signal is weak when the GPS is working, it seems more like the GPS is turning on and off rather than having a marginal signal.
