I am trying to compile a bunch of small videos taken by other people that have been emailed to me or sent in a private message on Facebook into one video using iMovie but I don't seem to be able to access the other videos as they were not shot by me, using my device. Can anyone help, please? I have iMovie on my phone and iPad. Thanks.

Based on what you stated, it sounds like you need to get these videos into your device’s photo library as that is where iMovie for iOS pulls the video clips for movie projects from. You can do this via iCloud Photo Library, transfer from iTunes on a computer or from a different iOS device:
