Incorrect Username/Password Error When Copying Files or Folders

Our business uses a Mac Mini (with OS X Yosemite) and the Server App to share our internal files. We've had this set-up for over year now with everything running smoothly. As of late however, we are no longer able to copy files or folders that reside in all shared folders. Basically, when we try to copy any file or folder that resides within any of our share points, we get the error 'Can't connect to the server because the name or password is incorrect'. This error occurs for every user account, including my own which has been specified as an administrator account. We are able to add files and folders (i.e.: copy from our local computers to the shared folders) as well as rename files and folders that reside within the shared folders. We are also able to create new folders without any error so I'm pretty certain that it is not a permissions issue. In addition, I've tried completely removing all shared folders and re-creating them but still get the same error. I've also tried creating new user accounts (both Local Directory and Local Network Directory accounts) and the problem persists when logged to the server using these new accounts. I simply don't know what else to do as this seems to be a software glitch. Any ideas?

Thank you

I have the same problem, El Cap systems connecting to Mavericks server cannot successfully copy a multi-folder structure within or between server shares. Multi-level folder copies will abort at some point with this error. Sometimes one folder will copy, sometimes two or three, but not all, and no folders at the second level. I test this routinely with a folder structure template.

Workaround: Because this only seems to happen to copies within and between shares, I copy from the server to the client machine, and then from the client to the new location on the server.

Yes. I can confirm that switching to AFP also works in our setup. Since AFP is not a practical default for our work, the alternative of copying locally and then back to the network is often more convenient than remounting a resource via AFP. It's merely an alternative workaround. Most of our production systems are not yet El Cap, so the problem has not become critical.

Unfortunately I suspect that there are other more subtle symptoms of this problem though I have not been able to isolate them. Since I began noticing this particular problem, I have also noticed an increase in other permissions problems, particularly with Microsoft Office for Mac.

Well, my experience is it's best to keep the version of OS X running on client machines and on mac server as close as possible. Luckily, upgrading a Mawerick server to an El Capitan is a piece of cake.

Also I always experience some issues when smb protocol is in use, and because of this I always turn off smb on server side - if possible / or force client machines to establish a connection via afp by using aliases (that remember the connection protocol).
