iTunes Quits Unexpectedly

For some reason my iTunes keeps crashing and will "Quit Unexpectedly." I did a clean install of OS X El Capitan and all associated programs but I'm still having issues. I moved the iTunes folder from my Time Machine backup and all the files are there and working but still after about 30 minutes of use - sometimes longer - iTunes will unexpectedly quit. I tried Disk Utility to see if anything was wrong and it didn't find anything to repair.

Any ideas? Is there a better way to import my music if that's the cause of the problem?

I moved the iTunes folder from my Time Machine backup

How did you do that? The correct way would be to "Enter Time Machine" and restore the backed up iTunes folder.

Be sure to select the folder from a backup predating the "erase and reinstall" – not one created subsequent to that time.

If iTunes continues to "unexpectedly quit" find the relevant crash report using the Console app. Copy and paste the entire crash report in a reply. Omit or obscure any information you might consider personal.

Hi John - After doing a clean install I manually installed all software on my own not from the Time Machine backup. When I connected the Time Machine hard drive it asked me to setup the drive as Time Machine but I was afraid it would erase it. I located the backup file I needed and copied and pasted the "iTunes" folder into my Music folder on my hard drive in the same location. Isn't this the same as restoring the files from a backup?

Below is the crash report:

When you wrote "clean install" I am assuming you erased the startup volume and reinstalled OS X according to the following: Erase your drive and install OS X. Is that correct?

Assuming that is the procedure you followed Apple's prescribed way of reinstalling your own software is to use Setup Assistant, which is the step immediately subsequent to that. It is described in detail here: Move your content to a new Mac.

It asks if you want to transfer information from a Time Machine backup. That would allow you to select your User account, and specifically the Music folder alone, if you wanted to constrain the restoration to that.

Having said that, I do not know what would occur if you were to open the TM backup and use the Finder to drag files and folders across the way you described, especially with programs such as iTunes when "Keep iTunes media folder organized" is selected in its Preferences. That folder, and Time Machine for that matter, ought to be considered "no user serviceable parts inside" when it comes to manipulating their contents. It might work, but it's asking for trouble, and might explain the crashes you're experiencing.

When I connected the Time Machine hard drive it asked me to setup the drive as Time Machine but I was afraid it would erase it.

I believe the dialog asks if you want to use it for Time Machine backups. That does not erase it, but it will probably create a new backup, separate from the existing one.

After erasing a source volume – and not restoring from a Time Machine backup – you will need to "associate" that backup with the newly erased source. Time Machine should ask if you want to do that, but if it doesn't, you can explicitly instruct it to do that later.

In any event, what I recommend after an "erase and reinstall" is to follow the path Apple provides for you: transfer information from your Time Machine backup – selectively, if desired. At this point, that may be the least time-consuming option for you.
