Pay particular attention to:

On portable Macs:

  • The Ethernet port turns off, if applicable (see note below)
  • Expansion card slots turn off
  • The built-in modem, if present, turns off (see note below)
  • An AirPort card, if present, turns off (see note below)
  • The USB ports only responds to the power key on an external keyboard (see below)
  • The optical media drive, if present, spins down
  • Audio input and output turns off
  • Keyboard illumination, if a feature of your portable computer, turns off

A computer uses considerably less power when in sleep mode than when awake. The computer will continue to power RAM in sleep mode, so that whatever was in RAM when the computer went to sleep will still be there when the computer wakes. This also means that computers with more RAM use slightly more power in sleep mode.

Note: Portable computers have no network connectivity when in sleep mode, but can wake if the Energy Saver option "Wake for network access" is enabled.

Well I am totally stumped.

I reset my energy saving setting to Default as was recommended...booted into safe mode, restarted, etc. NOTHING works.

Closed machine at 10:30pm EST and reopened just now, 9:41am. 96% battery when I closed it...88% when I opened it. So 8% loss in less than 12 hours when supposedly the machine is asleep.

This never ever happened on my MacBook Air 2013. Never

Instead of closing the lid to put it to Sleep, try putting it to Sleep by just selecting Sleep from the Apple menu and leaving the lid open.

I have a MacBook Early 2015, and in the past, on several occasions, it wouldn't accept the Sleep menu command because the Mail appication canceled the command. When that occurs, you get message shown on the screen, but if the lid was closed, I wouldn't have seen it.

This is a major issue for me right now. At the end of the day, I disconnect my 2016 MacBook from an Acer USB-C monitor and then close the lid. The battery is always at 100% at the end of the day. When I open the laptop the next morning and plug in the USB-C display, the computer acts like it is starting up from being previously powered off--all of my open apps have been quit and all previous finder windows are closed. The battery is now around 60%.

Have the same issue. New MacBook Pro Retina 15, sometimes it is losing nearly 10-12% overnight.

It is regular but not permanent. Sometimes it loses it, sometimes not. May be it is because i migrated from older MacBook. I reinstalled os without cleaning everything, has been entering safe mode. It fixed Apple Store login issue i had, but battery drain still remains.

If you search the Internet for this problem there are literally 100 of threads pertaining to this. It boils down to a common problem but with many sources. There is one thread on this community, that I can't find now where an individual goes through Console Logs and shows what to look for and how to configure an XML file to stop. I didn't pay much attention to it at the time, but it's out there somewhere.

The consensus was that the newer machines boot so fast, why not turn them off, a pain we are not used to, but a short quick fix in the mean time.
