iPod Touch 6th Generation & CarPlay

So, I can see this has been asked a few times, but I can't see a thread with an actual definitive answer. Does the latest iPod Touch work with Apple CarPlay?

I know the CarPlay page only states iPhone, but equally it doesn't actually state that it's not compatible with other iOS devices. Has anyone actually tried this or got a definitive answer from Apple?

I'd ask Apple myself, but it seems I can't ask them unless I own an iPod Touch and I'll only buy one if it will do what I need....

Unfortunately it doesn’t work. I tried it this morning with my 6th gen iPod. As instructed, I enabled Apple CarPlay in the settings then plugged the iPod into the USB but it didn’t recognise my iPod at all.

Of course it's realistic, I'm not expecting them to list every single sub-version of every product they make, if it is (as it appears) that the entire iPod family aren't compatible then that would be *one* item to list. They could go to town, list the iPad and Apple Watch for a whole three extra items.

As I said, I know the CarPlay page only states iPhone, I just want to know for sure. Given the similarities in technology and operating system between the iPhone and iPod Touch, it's a pretty reasonable question.

If they're not going to let you contact support to ask until *after* you buy a product, then they could at least be more open and informative before you buy.

So, as I originally said, has anyone actually tried it so can answer definitively?
