Apple Software Update For iTunes Update

Today on my Windows 7 64-Bit, Apple Software Update detected an update for iTunes; but it would not install without an error. Not able to reproduce the error code, I believe the error was on the download. Eventually, I installed the updated version by using the manual download feature under Tools; but Apple Software Update acted peculiar on my attempts to update automatically. When starting it from the Start menu, Apple Software Update would open in two windows after the initial failure to download and install. Both Quick Time Player and iTunes open up and do not detect further updates. I hope I did not install anything damaged within this new update.

reboot WINDOWS 7 and press F7 to go into safe mode then try

if it works you might have something installed preventing execution

if not delete what you have for iTunes and DL it again.

If both iTunes and QuickTime launch successfully then I don't think you need to worry unduly. See Troubleshooting issues with iTunes for Windows updates if you should find that Apple Software Update continues to misbehave. Note too that QuickTime is no longer being supported by Apple. You probably don't need it and should uninstall it unless you have a specific requirement for it. See Uninstall QuickTime 7 for Windows - Apple Support.

Jimmy, I assume you mean start iTunes in Safe Mode; otherwise for Apple Software Update you would have meant Safe Mode With Networking. Am I correct?

Both programs start without problems. The troubleshooting article shows nothing applicable. I will try Jimmy's suggestion above. Thanks to all.

You could try repairing Apple Software Update from the programs and features control panel.

I cannot do anything now. After implementing Jimmy's suggestion, I could not restart Windows either in full Windows or Safe Mode. Last Good Configuration did not work either. I made a screenshot of when I opened iTunes in Safe Mode, but cannot send it. I am at a public library computer doing last minute tasks that I cannot do on my own computer. From the menu that came up, Windows went into a repair mode. The Windows screen is up without icons or a place to enter a password.

Ouch. Sounds like you might need to run Windows Startup Repair to repair startup files and/or use system restore to revert to an earlier version of your system. See http://www.techrepublic.com/article/rescue-an-ailing-system-launch-windows-10-st artup-repair-from-the-recovery-drive/ for example.

Startup Repair was my only option; and it is still running beyond 12 hours, my being afraid to stop it. I already thought of using System Restore which I cannot bring up. The Startup Repair was the only option.

I suspect that at 12 hours it has hung up, installing the OS from scratch takes less time. Reboot and see what you find. Could potentially be a RAM failure. If there are multiple memory modules you could see if removing one or other of them helps. Is the system drive SSD or HDD? How old is the system?

I acquired the system in 2010, Windows 7 being the most current OS. A repairman advised me to let it run another day. From what I remember, the manufacturer configured the hard drive, 80 GB and has a "D" letter section for data. With Startup Repair running I have no access to any information.

Sounds like it might be time to get a fresh hard drive, reinstall the operating system from scratch and then try to retrieve your data from backup or what can still be read from the old drive. See Recover your iTunes library from your iPod or iOS device if your data isn't backed up and the old drive won't read.

This hard drive is only two years old and I will not replace it without an expert scanning it for bad sectors. I have lost track of how many unnecessary hard drives I have purchased in my computer use. Why presume that a hard drive failure caused the problem?
