Can Numbers view 2 sheets at the same time yet?

Has Apple aded the ability to see two sheets from the same Numbers document at the same time yet?

This is a pretty basic and essential ease-of-use feature.

Any help appreciated - I'm currently pawing back and forth from sheet to sheet and it's a brutal usability experience.

Hoping I've missed something simple.

Cheers

I suggest opening a completely new instance of Numbers using the terminal command:

open -n /Applications/Numbers.app

the application "Terminal" is in the folder /Applications/Utilities

then in that second instance of Numbers, view the same document while selecting the "other" sheet.

this seems to work OK with two monitors. If you only have one monitor then you have to make the windows small enough to fit.

"Has Apple added the ability to see two sheets from the same Numbers document at the same time yet?"

No.

"This is a pretty basic and essential ease-of-use feature."

Have you shared that opinion in a Feature Request made directly to Apple?

Numbers (menu) > Provide Numbers Feedback

Make your request. Explain how it would improve Numbers. Be clear, concise, and polite. It is unlikely that you will get any direct response, unless Apple needs further details regarding your request, but you may see your request answered in a future version of Numbers.

Hi threesixty,

Thanks Wayne and Yellow (can I call you Yellow? =: )

You can call me anything, but don't call me late for dinner 🙂.

A Numbers document with many Sheets (Tabs)

User uploaded file

The Very Large Database (on the Stocktake Sheet) has (in reality) many more Rows and Columns.

The table on the Avocado Sheet pulls values from the Very Large Database using formulas. How can we help you with those formulas?

To view two Sheets at the same time,

Save your document (for example, threesixty)

Menu > File > option key > Save as... (for example threesixty temp)

Open both documents, drag to resize (hide the Format Panels to make this easier) and drag them side-by-side (I am using one monitor):

User uploaded file

Just be sure which is the Master copy and which is the temp copy. Save the Master copy 👿 .

Regards,

Ian.

Hi threesixty,

How large are the tables?

How many Sheets in the document?

You can place (Cut and Paste) two tables on the same Sheet so you can work on them together. Then move (Cut and Paste) your final 'Presentation' to its own Sheet for on-screen display or printing.

If that does not work (because the tables are large), see this solution by SGIII for a way to easily navigate between Sheets.

SGIII has posted a method to jump to a sheet using AppleScript on Automator:

Re: linking sheets

Perhaps this could be on Sheet 1 (Tab 1). No need to print intermediate (working) Sheets.

Ian.

Thanks Wayne

I do have 2 displays.

I have a work around - I paste a table into a second document, then bring it back later. Obviously that's not ideal.

I also have a copy of Office 365 that I can use.

But I like the general interface in Numbers for rudimentary stuff.

Unfortunately, there are some pretty significant usability gaffs, especially in the last few versions.

Will try your workaround and hope for a feature add in the next version.

Thanks again.

"I swear Numbers used to open in separate windows once upon a time. I can't believe it's gone."

It did, and it still does, provided the separate windows are showing separate documents (including separate copies of the same document as described above by Yellowbox.)

What it won't do now, and to my knowledge, has never done, is display parts of the same document in two or more separate windows.

That feature not "gone." To be "gone" it would have had to exist at some time in the past. It hasn't done that.

Barry
