I didn't find any answer to this question except of making an empty image with utility app and drag & drop the files but I can't imagine there isn't a better solution to create an image disk without the unused space. I'm shooting with SD card a lot and need to backup those disks without the unused space. Is there any solution ?

If you create a disk image from a device, it will only take as much space as was *used* on that device, not the total capacity of the card.
In Disk Utility, File->New Image->Image From <name of device>

thanks for your help but I already tried that. Maybe it's a formating problem, when shoting with gopro (fat32) it's ok but with my GH4 that is Exfat format, it's not working.
Sorry, that is not what I am seeing. I have a spare 4GB SD card that I reformatted as ExFAT, dropped some 17 MB into it, created a disk image and it came out with 17MB, not 4GB.

I did some test and above 32Go, the camera (GH4) is formatting in ExFat (below it's fat32 and no problems) so with an almost empty 64Go SD card, the new disk image from it is almost 64Go.
Looking further into this: when creating a disk image, there is a little popup menu at the bottom where you get to choose between "compressed", "read only", "read/write", "CD/DVD master".
Try choosing "compressed". I tried it and it used very little space; the last two options indeed used as much space as the whole card.
I tried already but the read only is the same size, compressed is very big also.
I think I found it!
If I select the volume, and create an image, it is huge.
But if I select the whole disk, and create an image, it is small. Why it works this way, I don't know.
