TextEdit slow, Excel won't work

After the latest El Capitan update, Textedit files take nearly a minute to open! And Microsoft Excel does not work at all. Does anyone know how to resolve this? It said it was just a security update, but my computer was locked down for nearly a half hour, and there was some dialog when it finished stating there had been some sort of problem, but then when the computer rebooted, I didn't see evidence of that until I noticed how slow Textedit was to open, and that I can't use Microsoft Excel at all. Microsoft Word will still open fine.

Don't worry, it is already a tiny bit better: no more crash reports after the 28-th.

But still slow and unpredictable.

we do it by hand, one thing at the time:

--- but first we remove every automatic start:

in Applications->Users&Groups:

when the lock bottom left is closed, click it and put in your password to open it (see the red arrow in my picture here)

select the "LoginItems" button (green arrow) and remove every entry in the right panel by selecting it, then click the minus sign underneath (green arrows). When every entry is removed and the panel is empty, click the little red dot (blue arrow) and then restart the mac:

User uploaded file

--- now we remove the hp.tocgenerator:

open a Finder window by clicking Finder in the Dock, in the left navigation panel select your startup disk Abundance (in my Finder picture called "Mac SSD", red arrow), then click the Library folder open (green arrow)

User uploaded file

then select the LaunchAgents Folder and open it

(second Finder Picture below, green arrow)

set it at "list view" if it is not already in the View menu of Finder (blue arrow), then select "com.hp.help.tocgenerator.plist" and CTL+click it and select "delete". Then close the Finder window with the little red dot.

User uploaded file

Did that have success?

tell me

It ran much quicker this time, but still slow--started up fine 😉 But Extensions still shows Symantec and EasyBloom, argh! And I do not want to get rid of Flux, as I use it every day, but if you know of a dimming software that works better with Mac, I'd be willing to install it, instead.

I couldn't figure out which Flashplayer to open--there's not a standalone in Applications, but Flash CS3 and CS6 (and CS1, too, but that won't work on this OS anymore--I've had this mac a while!). So instead I just deleted that PepperFlashPlayer folder from Library/Internet Plugins instead. Hopefully that will not mess anything up.

There is so much on this computer from through the years, I have no idea what some of these programs even do...I hate to get rid of things like Appleworks, but they won't work any more anyhow, and I can still open Appleworks files on my older macs running OS 10.4 and 9.

Hello Paula

I suppose you have already have shot Pepper.

OK, now the real work:

From here you have to exercise real caution:

--- empty the Trash bin.

--- open Finder, select your startup disk Abundance, select the System folder, in the System Folder select/open the Extensions folder, (beware, there are a few hundred files in there), a lot of files start with "com", sort alphabetically (click the name column) and:

- select every file with symantec in the name (there are 6) and delete each,

- then select the file with easybloom in the name (there is 1) and delete it,

- then select the file with quantumintech in the name (there is 1) and delete it.

be very careful not to make mistakes, but you have done such above with good succes.

Close the Finder window.

--- Now Restart the mac !

Ignore all messages.

--- After it is restarted open the Trash to see if there are no files in it that are not listed above, there should be only the 8 files that you deleted.

Then empty the Trash !

--- Now restart again.

--- And now run a new etrecheck list.

The System Folder in root (/System) only has one folder in it, Library.

User uploaded file

That Library folder has an Extensions folder in it, but no files that start with com, no files with "symantec" or "quantum" in them--I found the one Easybloom file and deleted that.

User uploaded file

Is there a different folder for System/Extensions, somewhere else? Or could it be that some of the files are hidden in the folder I've shown a screenshot of, and I need to go through the Go menu up top? I can not find "symantec" by doing a search in my main drive Abundance. The only place I see a System folder is in root...

Jul 31, 2016 12:17 PM in response to Chocolatepaula

You are in the correct Extensions folder.

I am sorry, look for the names, especially symantec, a fair bit of work.

edit:

if you do not find them exit the folder and enter System->Library->LaunchDaemons folder, search there. If not or not all:

exit the LaunchDaemons folder and enter System->Library->LaunchAgents folder, search there.

In total you have to remove 8 files.

Jul 31, 2016 4:35 PM in response to Lexiepex

I wrote out a long, thoughtful reply referencing several things and places on my mac, and somehow it disappeared! Ack!

I cannot find either symantec or quantumintech anywhere in the System folder or its subfolders.

I did find a Norton Solutions Support folder in /Library/Application Support, with subfolders dating to 2005, but NO Norton application in Applications.

I found 4, not 6 extensions dating to 2005, but they do not have symantec in them:

SymDC.kext

SymEvent.kext

symfs.kext

SymOSXKernelUtilities.kext

I hope this post does not disappear like the other one did--I'm not sure I can remember all this again.

Jul 31, 2016 11:58 PM in response to Chocolatepaula

good search, these are already a long time there, horribly old...

- these are the files to delete (it can be that 2 of the 6 are inside one of them)

and also delete the Norton folder in /Library/ApplicationSupport.

- to be sure Open Finder, select the GO menu hold the Alt/Option key and choose Library (this is another Library), then open the Application Support folder in there: delete any folder with the Symantec or Norton name in there too.

You have to restart after this.

- and make a new etrecheck list

I'll think about easybloom and the other files, and come back on that later.

Aug 1, 2016 12:18 PM in response to Lexiepex

I went through and deleted all of the 7 extensions from 2005 after doing a search on a couple of them and finding out that they were, in fact, Symantec. I also deleted some other old things (fingers crossed) and had already opened and had open the finder window from the Go menu with my own user Library. Here is the new Etrecheck report:
