31MB is a relatively small amount of storage. What application are you using to create it and does it have a lot of graphics in it such as photos, graphs, etc...

Should not be too big, Apple's mail program can send a file that size using MailDrop. OS X daily has an article to help explain it for you http://osxdaily.com/2014/11/14/use-mail-drop-email-large-files-mac-os-x/

You can always create a Dropbox account and tell your prof to download it from there. If you are not already using Dropbox it's easy to use and to also share files with.

Convert it to PDF.

That's enormous for an essay with no images in it. I have 51 page/ 23k words Word docs. They include footnotes, citations, references and they weigh in at 112kb - that's kilobytes - so there's something wrong there.

I'd ask that over on the MicroSoft forums.

Do you want the tutors to be able to make changes to the Word document? If not then convert the Word doc to a PDF, i.e. do a Print to PDF, which can't be modified by the recipient.

If you do find out what was wrong can you post back? As Terence said that is enormous for a word document with no embedded graphics. It's fairly large even for a document with graphics.

I have a 170 page user's manual with graphics on nearly every other page in PDF form and it's only 7.4 MB.

Did you type this essay directly in Word, or did you export it from the Pages app? The latter will often result in ridiculous big files.

PDFs can be commented on via annotation. I may not understand the relationship but offering an editable Word document could let someone change what you've written and you might miss it. Annotations on pdf files are easily discernible from the original content. This may not be valid for your situation so take it with a grain of salt.
